The mat worked well enough, it was fairly comfortable but it smelled like industrial rubber.
I aired it out, washed it as per instructions and after two weeks the odor was still very annoying.

I love this mat so much I am going to buy one for my husband. We both tend to dig holes in our mats from "jump-backs." No nicks or holes yet.
A friend of mine has had hers for a year and still loves hers too. I highly recommend this mat to any serious yogi or yogini.

4.0 out of 5 stars good mat, can be slick, June 17, 2007

This review is from: Hugger Mugger Mandara Yoga Mat (72-Inch, Black) (Sports)
I bought this mat because I wanted a good quality mat that would last a long time, so I was ok with paying a bit more than I saw the majority of the mats going for. I like the larger size of this mat, compared with slimmer ones in the past, and the thickness is great, it absorbs a lot of the hardness of the ground. I use it both for power ashtanga yoga and more relaxing hatha practices, so it gets a pretty all-around use. my only complaint is that it had an oily texture when it arrived, and even still will become slick during a hot session which can be quite annoying (I suppose it could be remedied with a yoga towel). this is becoming less of an issue as time goes on, but is a pain after purchasing a more expensive mat. so, I guess I would definitely suggest it for a mellower practice, but I would not endorse it for anything that would cause a lot of heat (and sweat) to be generated, at least not without towel use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Hugger Mugger Yoga Mat, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Hugger Mugger Mandara Yoga Mat (72-Inch, Black) (Sports)
I'm only 5 ft 9 inches but I always seem to fall off the edges of a mat during classes. This mat really keeps my attention on the class instead of repositioning so much. The extra thickness is great - I see other people doubling their mats to get the extra cushiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars the mat to end all other mats!, February 22, 2008
This review is from: Hugger Mugger Mandara Yoga Mat (72-Inch, Black) (Sports)
ive been doing yoga for quite some time now and ive tried SEVERAL different mats. the problem with most mats is that when you get one that is squishy enough to be comfy for doing floor work they inevitably stretch in down dog and get all bent out of shape. the mandara is an awesome feet of yoga engineering! there is very little to no movement at all in the shape of the mat so theres no stretching if your in a narrow downward facing dog. another problem ive found is that if you do ashtanga or bikram yoga theres an issue with sweat, most sticky mats if they even think about getting wet, you simply slide right off your mat. not only is the mandera not slippery when wet, as you grip the surface with your hands or feet or both at the same time, the mandara grips you back instead of just being sticky. the spongy texture is comfy and supportive enough for floor work as well as being firm and stable enough for even the hardest balance poses. i cant say enough about my new favorite mat! thanks guys!

p.s. the only minor snafu is that it kinda smells like a pool floaty when ya get it but the smell does go away ;o)

peace and light
Karson

This is a great yoga mat. I was looking to "upgrade" my yoga mat to something a bit more substantial than what I had. I had decided on the Mandara Mat and found that Amazon had the best price. I was concerned that practicing on a thicker mat would make balancing postures more difficult; however, the thickness is very dense and, if anything, has made my practice more enjoyable. The only downside to the mat is the weight. It is quite heavy and bulky and does not fit in the mat bag I currently have. Regardless, I am very pleased and would highly recommend this mat for students and teachers alike.

I sent it back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this mat., August 21, 2009
This review is from: Hugger Mugger Mandara Yoga Mat (72-Inch, Black) (Sports)
I'm a yoga teacher with a daily vinyasa practice. I burned through two hugger mugger eco mats in less than 6 months before buying this one last year. I just bought a second one so I could keep one in the car and one in the house. In over a year of practicing with this mat, it looks like brand new. No shredding or peeling like the eco mats I tried. They also provide a good firm cushion for knees and elbows, no squishiness underfoot. The mat has good traction, but If I'm doing a really sweaty practice I still use a yogi toes towel with it. The mats do need to be washed at least twice and left out to air before you start using them. When new, the smell is really noticeable in chaturanga or savasana when your face is close to the surface of the mat. I throw mine in the washing machine on gentle cycle every so often to to give it a good wash. In between a mild non-toxic spray cleaner like 7th Generation works great for getting off the surface junk and keeping it fairly sticky.

The weight is not a problem for me. I carry it over my shoulder in a mat sling and feel that it's about as heavy as a full purse.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE the Mandara Mat!, January 22, 2008
This review is from: Hugger Mugger Mandara Yoga Mat (72-Inch, Black) (Sports)
This is the best mat for your money. I have used my mat for over two years as an instructor and in my personal practice and absolutely love it. Still has many more asanas left in it. Thick for comfort on the joints, but not mushy. My 5'8" frame appreciates the extra length. The chemical smell does go away and the initial slipperiness will go away with a few uses and wipe downs. Hang in there. You'll be so glad you did.

My first mat was a Wai Lana mat - and after 3 months of my "power yoga" classes it showed it wasn't quite up for the challenge. I don't regret investing my 12.99 in my first mat - it was a good way to "test" out yoga to see if I liked it and could actually do it. Once it started leaving confetti on the floor and my body during yoga I knew I needed something tougher.

I love my Hugger Mugger Mandara mat - my only complaint is the chemical smell it comes with. I know it is hard to get a mat without some sort of funky smell so I expected it and gave it a quick scrubbing the day it arrived.
So far the mat has stood up against my yoga classes and hasn't caused me to slip yet! I haven't had the mat that long - and if problems arise, I will try to post an update but so far it's done what it promised

I would recommend this mat to anyone who wants to invest the money in a heavy duty yoga mat. I like that it is 1/4 inch thick - helps when you are doing a 10-minute frog pose!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this mat., March 17, 2007
This review is from: Hugger Mugger Mandara Yoga Mat (72-Inch, Black) (Sports)
This is the perfect mat for my Power and Hot yoga classes. It's sturdy with the right amount of thickness, especially on your knees. It lays flat without the edges rolling up. I'm 5'7" and appreciate the extra length. I've been practicing Yoga for a year and have purchased 4 mats during this time. This one is my absolute favorite. I won't go back to the others.
