Book Description

June 1998 Monster Under the Bed
Huggly wants to do the things that human children do. But it's never as easy as he thinks. Children will laugh along with him as he tries to understand their world. This is the first book in a new series from the bestselling author/illustrator of "Five Ugly Monsters". Full color.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Huggly is a pudgy, somewhat klutzy, googly-eyed, altogether unfrightening monster who lives under the bed of a "people child." One night Huggly bumps his head on the boy's bureau, becomes intrigued by the clothes inside and gamely tackles the project of dressing: "He wondered why they wear the stuff. He wondered how. Huggly decided to try for himself." As in Mordicai Gerstein's Stop Those Pants! (Children's Forecasts, Apr. 27), this situation provides the slimmest of plots, but pours on pure silliness. Scenes of Huggly's google eyes peering through white cotton briefs over his head, his scaly green torso clad in a striped T-shirt with "a nice hole for his tail" and his monster hands covered with socks will likely tickle children. Arnold's (Parts) signature cartoon illustrations, overlain with a fine tangle of scrawly lines, create modulations in color and an almost crackled look. This benign fantasy is a reassuring way to imagine a monster's nocturnal adventures. Ages 5-7.

More About the Author

Born in Elmira, New York, Tedd grew up in a family of six with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida. He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Carol, a Kindergarten teacher, drew Tedd's attention to children's books. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, No Jumping on the Bed!. His second son, William, now stars in No More Water in the Tub!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published more than 30 books as author and illustrator. When not working on his books, Tedd's interests include tennis, sketching, reading, coin collecting, and the computer."The inspiration to begin writing and illustrating for children came from my wife, Carol. As a kindergarten teacher, she collected picture books. I was attracted to their colorful pages and the way the words and pictures played with each other, much like the captioned cartoons I had drawn when I was young."Perhaps the biggest surprise of my career as an author is that I'm now going back to elementary school! Visiting young readers in classrooms and libraries is something I love. Kids keep me on my toes and they ask a lot of questions. The number one question seems to be, 'Where do you get your ideas?' It's also the hardest question to answer because every idea is different. Some ideas seem to pop out of thin air -- while I'm in the shower or walking the dog. Others come from reading or research. But most of my ideas come from my family and the things they do and say."For instance, one time when my first son, Walter, was five years old, I found him lying on the couch, looking pale as a ghost and clutching a Bible to his chest. He was praying! When I asked what was wrong, he wouldn't answer. In fact, he wouldn't even open his mouth. My wife, Carol, finally coaxed a response from him: he pointed inside his mouth. Carol exclaimed, 'You have a loose tooth!' Walter's eyes nearly popped out with fright. We quickly assured him that it was perfectly okay for his tooth to come loose and that a new one would replace it. But Carol and I looked at each other and realized that despite all our efforts to be good parents, we had somehow completely forgotten to warn Walter that teeth fall out! He had thought he was falling apart! I made a little note in my journal; then ten years later, I expanded that memory into my book Parts."Tedd Arnold lives in Elmira, New York, with his wife, Carol, two sons, Walter and William, two cats, Cody and Frankie, and one dog, Hershey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully ridiculous!, October 18, 1999
Poor innocent Huggly tries on people clothes. Good thing he doesn't know what item goes where! This is for any kid who likes to do silly things, or just wants to laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huggly makes reading fun, fun, funny!, December 9, 2002
How could one resist a chubby, goofy little green monster who constantly gets himself into trouble? I certainly can't and neither can my two kids. The Huggly books were some of the first books that my children requested me to reread (and their collection is quite huge) and they never seem to tire of them. Today my young son (who is just learning to read) brought home my personal favorite "Huggly Gets Dressed" to read as a homework assignment and I got to view it from a new perspective as he read to me.

In Huggly Gets Dressed our favorite little green monster who lives under the bed of the "people child" sneaks out to have himself an adventure. He discovers the people childs clothing drawer (actually he bonks his head on the drawer and knocks the clothing on his head) and has a heck of time trying to figure out how these clothes things work. Just when he thinks he's got it all figured out he hears a knock on the door! Oh, no it's the people child's mother!! Huggly tries to run and hilarity ensues.

The text was easy enough for my son to read without getting thoroughly frustrated but it was also challenging enough to make him stop and think through a few new words. He laughed aloud at the hilarious drawings of Huggly which are funny even when viewed for the tenth time. I recommended this for kids of all ages but especially those between four & seven.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Kids Love Huggly!, September 14, 2000
By A Customer
Huggly is one of the most popular characters in our house. The books are wonderfully illustrated with bright colors and easy to follow pictures. The character of Huggly, the monster from under the bed, is really cute and is a non-threatening monster. He looks at the world around him in ways that small children can relate. The books are silly--my kids want to read Huggly over and over. This is a most-have for anyone with pre-schoolers.
