I have bought this wine guide every year since 1985. I find it gives me invaluable assistance in choosing different wines for various foods, and occasions. I cannot afford to just experiment on my own, and Hugh Johnson's guide gives one a great starting point. In addition the information eg. concerning the different vintages in all the wine producing areas of the world, is very interesting. This book makes a great gift for wine connoisseurs.

For the size and the price this is far away the best wine guide available.
In addition to rating wines, it lists wine-food affinities and serving temperatures (widely misunderstood in US).
I've had every edition back into the mid-1980s and never miss a year.

Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book is a compact, yet highly informative guide to world wines. In my view, this book has three distinguishing, and very desirable features. First, the coverage is broad in that most of the major wine producing countries are covered. Second, specific and concise information about a large number of individual wines is provided. This information may relate, for example to grapes, ownership, recent investment in the winery, life of the wine in storage, and whether past vintages are mature. Third, and very important for the consumer who is considering the purchase of a wine with which he or she is not familiar, Hugh Johnson's ranking of wines using his four star classification, is borne of excellent judgment and long experience, and in my view is incredibly helpful.

There is probably no better, handier, more succinct, more useful wine guide in the world, suitable for the beginner and indispensable to the expert. Covers virtually all wine growing areas and major winemakers in the world, and most significant minor winemakers as well as rating vintages, a brief history of many and much much more (grape types, regions and appellations, recommended serving temperatures for different wine types, etc, etc. Using efficient, logical conventions to indicate vintages, he shows (wine by wine) what is ready to drink and what not, what are his favorite vintages and what the winemaker's, big vintage years and other lesser years. If one could own only one wine book, this would be the one, without doubt.

Compact and condensed, this is a great travel companion to his terrific World Atlas of Wines. I own many wine books covering many regions in detail, but don't think one needs more than these two books to know the subject comprehensively.

I wouldn't want to be a slave to reviews, and certainly do not refer to it in restaurants or before every purchase, but I do find Hugh Johnson's book a helpful, reliable and convenient guide to choosing wine. Probably best for someone who already knows wine types and regions, but needs some help navigating all the different producers.
