This is a great buy for any wine lover. If you care about your wine, if you are curious to try something new, and you would like to know what vintages are known to have yielded great harvest, this is the guide for you. I use this book to check out everything beginning with terminology and different wine varietals and ending with a tiny section on what type of wine one can experiment with if he or she likes a certain type of wine. "If you like a Chablis....try...." A curious mind will love that section! It is easy to use guide and it encompasses maps as well, which are extremely useful. Also, even a less known producer is likely to be mentioned in this book/guide, so if you bought a bottle of a garage like Bordeaux, you are likely to have a few words about the producer and its wine quality. Truly great.

Very handy wine guide. Shipped on time and quality product - covers all the major wine regions and lots of wines by year. Tells you which ones to drink early, and which ones will be better to save so they'll be even better aged. Plus it gives you a reason to try a few new wines...

It's most handy to have this pocket reference available in your pocket at all times. My only complaint is that the eBook format doesn't really work well for reference materials. In a novel you typically read from beginning to end. You might set a few bookmarks and sometimes bounce back to a previous chapter. In a reference book you spend most of your time bouncing around looking for things - Go to the vintage chart for Bordeaux, find the list of the best Brunello producers, find the review of Chateau de Something. With searches only done with keywords and with the arrangement of the book set up for printed material, I found that searches would return too many keyword hits that required too many tries to find what I was searching for. That said, while traveling, it was better to have it available than not to have it at all.

This and Oz Clarke's similar guide offers considerable help for wine buying forays. I've found many bargains with help from this book and Johnson is many times more comprehensible than any ap can provide. So go ahead and be a person who carrys an actual book and know something about your soon to be purchased wine. It can stop you from making dreadful, expensive mistakes or missing bargains. It's all in the simply outlined detail; like year, area grown, the grower/vintner, notes on the wines....and pretty fast to index too.

I have been using Johnson's Pocket Wine Book for years; I never fail to learn something useful about a wine, no matter how obscure. And it stays useful for several years after publication.
