Outstanding,
This review is from: Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book 2007: 30th Edition (Hardcover)
I can't believe the amount of information contained in this book. It's staggering. No wonder this is the best selling "wine book", with 8 million copies in print.
Initially I purchased this for the vintage charts, as I'm relatively new to wine and haven't a clue about what vintages were good and what veintages were not, but this book has so much more to offer, listing producers, vineyards...it's, well, outstanding. This is one book that every wine professional should have.

This is the third time I have bought this impressive pocket guide to wine. There is just so much information packed into a book that you can literally fit in your pocket and take to restaurants, wine stores and your favorite wine snob's house. Hugh Johnson includes comprehensive vintage charts with recommendations on when to drink wines from each vintage, many entries for producers around the world and their best wines and vintages, a complete list of grape varieties, wine and food pairings and much more. As I said, don't leave home without it!

I have purchased this book each year for the past five years as a gift for my son-in-law. He loves great wines and has found Hugh Johnson a valuable source of information. Each year they go to France and purchase wines according to Hugh and have been very happy with their choices.

Simply awesome. I know nothing about wine other than what I think tastes good. This book has helped guide me on what to buy and when to drink it in a very clear/easy to understand way.

I buy this book every year. Fits in my purse, I wouldn't go any where without it. You can research vintages, vineyards, food pairings and more. One can't remember everything. Now one doesn't have to.

The classic pocket guide, though getting a little bulkier. In an attempt to keep this edition from being even thicker, some material from previous editions has been cut; e.g., listings for particular foods and suggested wines to accompany them. But it is still handy, detailed, comprehensive, authoritative, and all most wine drinkers need, unless you're the type who sniffs corks.

I have found that if you seriously enjoy wine, you need more than one book. I recommend this as one of the books you should have. It is a great reference for concise information on particular regions, wineries, chateaux, etc. It complements some of more comprehensive books such as Jancis Robinson's "Oxford Companion to Wine" and Hugh Johnson's "World Atlas of Wine". In short, no single book will suffice.

For the last 14 years, I have used this guide as an indispensable reference for my wine selections. I can not think of any selection made, using this guide, where the wine did not meet my expectations or the expectations of those that tried my selections.
For those that are new to wines, trust this guide. For it will give you the choices and accuracy you can depend on.

A nice reference. Easy to use and understand. Written for the wine lover and novice alike. Small enough to be carried in a purse or portfolio - includes pairings, vintage analysis, national overviews and specific wine and winery ratings - as well as recommendations by the author.
