Book Description

March 15, 1998 Hugo
Now learning a foreign language can be enjoyable as well as challenging, and not require a trip back to the classroom. Available in both book-only or book-and-cassette format, these Three-Month Language Courses are outstanding self-study programs designed for the individual seeking to acquire a good working knowledge of a language in a short amount of time. Devoting just over an hour daily to the course, the program provides grammar lessons, contextual conversion drills, relevant word lists, and graded exercises, giving you an immediate and practical grasp of the language. In addition, pronunciation is made easy with Hugo's unique "imitated pronunciation" system, which represents foreign sounds with English syllables. Whether you are a businessman tackling an international account, a student preparing for an adventurous holiday, or simply a lover of new languages, the Three-Month Language Course makes learning easy, satisfying, and more fun than ever before.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Designed for people who wish to learn a foreign language for business or vacation purposes, DK's "Hugo" series of audio language courses is perfect for libraries in need of good, inexpensive language cassettes. They help illustrate many of the model words or phrases as well as provide oral exercises that strengthen the student's pronunciation and listening skills. The series takes a realistic approach to learning a foreign language by reinforcing the concept that acquiring knowledge of any foreign language takes time. Users begin with an introduction to word pronunciation, vowels and consonants, and basic grammar conventions. There are a few differences in what is covered by the four languages. For example, the Italian series does not offer the concluding practice reading sessions that the other languages do. One minor quibble: the binding on the study guides does not seem to have been designed for the strenuous use they will see in libraries. Those who wish to begin acquiring a practical base knowledge of French, German, Italian, or Spanish will find DK's series a good choice. 2.0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but Could be Improved, April 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hugo Language Course: Spanish In Three Months (with Cassettes) (Paperback)
I brought this course having never studied Spanish before, and was disappointed in some things. The tapes are of poor technical quality with random fade-outs at crucial moments. The book seems to be poorly edited. In one instance, (I am only on chapter 3), there is a word in the answer key to a translation exercise that isn't introduced until several pages later. I also think the course would be more helpful if the exercises made some attempt to incorporate material studied in previous chapters, but instead, they focus narrowly on the material just covered. However, I am learning Spanish with this course, and I guess that is the bottom line.

5.0 out of 5 stars ¡Me encanta! ¡Me encanta! ¡Me encanta!, April 19, 2001

This review is from: Hugo Language Course: Spanish In Three Months (with Cassettes) (Paperback)
I knew quite a large amount of Spanish before reading this book, but now that I have done, I am almost fluent. This book explains the fundamental basics of the language right up to quite complicated grammar. I find languages easy, but even if it were more of a struggle for you, I think that this course would be incredibly useful. This book explains almost all you could want to know about the language and if you finish it and want to know more, it does have a sequel, 'Advanced Spanish Course' which is also very good although it doesn't focus so much on the essential grammar but more on Spanish culture. Even a complete beginner would find this course helpful and I am proof of that as I taught myself Dutch from the book from the same series. Solamente puedo decir compradlo compradlo para que me entendáis si nada más.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to Re-learn Spanish, March 29, 2000
This book is really great for those trying to re-learn spanish. It really moves too fast for a beginner. Therefore, for someone trying to learn spanish for the first time I would suggest reading 'Barron's Learning Spanish the Fast and Fun Way' before reading this book. This book covers a large amount of material in only 13 chapters. This is book is for serious self-study.
