I knew quite a large amount of Spanish before reading this book, but now that I have done, I am almost fluent. This book explains the fundamental basics of the language right up to quite complicated grammar. I find languages easy, but even if it were more of a struggle for you, I think that this course would be incredibly useful. This book explains almost all you could...

2.0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but Could be Improved
I brought this course having never studied Spanish before, and was disappointed in some things. The tapes are of poor technical quality with random fade-outs at crucial moments. The book seems to be poorly edited. In one instance, (I am only on chapter 3), there is a word in the answer key to a translation exercise that isn't introduced until several pages later. I...

I also think the course would be more helpful if the exercises made some attempt to incorporate material studied in previous chapters, but instead, they focus narrowly on the material just covered. However, I am learning Spanish with this course, and I guess that is the bottom line.

I knew quite a large amount of Spanish before reading this book, but now that I have done, I am almost fluent. This book explains the fundamental basics of the language right up to quite complicated grammar. I find languages easy, but even if it were more of a struggle for you, I think that this course would be incredibly useful. This book explains almost all you could want to know about the language and if you finish it and want to know more, it does have a sequel, 'Advanced Spanish Course' which is also very good although it doesn't focus so much on the essential grammar but more on Spanish culture. Even a complete beginner would find this course helpful and I am proof of that as I taught myself Dutch from the book from the same series. Solamente puedo decir compradlo compradlo para que me entendáis si nada más.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to Re-learn Spanish, March 29, 2000
This book is really great for those trying to re-learn spanish. It really moves too fast for a beginner. Therefore, for someone trying to learn spanish for the first time I would suggest reading 'Barron's Learning Spanish the Fast and Fun Way' before reading this book. This book covers a large amount of material in only 13 chapters. This is book is for serious self-study.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book For Nuts Of All Ages, August 15, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Hugo Language Course: Spanish In Three Months (with Cassettes) (Paperback)
Who am I? Well, that's not important. The whole story is, I'm a total foreign language nut. I'm obsessed. I can read, write, understand, and speak fluent chinese(my native language), but that's not nearly enough. This book is delicious and calms my cravings for a language. It's extremely useful, and probably really does make you know the language like a native in three months(or less). It teaches all the essential grammar and gives you some new vocabulary as you go along. There are plenty of exercises to test what you learned, and they always make sure to make you use your new vocabulary. Using this book is a great, fun way to stuff Spanish up your nose! However, there are some downsides to this book. The explanations of new grammar can be confusing, especially to a kid like me! Plus, there are tons of english words- big grammar words that give me a headache! I think this should help anyone thinking of getting this book. Bueno suerte,y pienso te gustaras este buen libro. Adios!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introductory course, April 2, 2002

This is a pretty good intoduction to the language. It gives you a pretty good summary of all the grammar (although sometimes an explanation of how the grammar works in English might help) and a basic working vocabulary.

If you are travelling to a Spainish speaking country you will be able to make yourself understood and you will be able to understand some very basic conversation. Do not expect to be fluent - you need way more vocabulary than this book supplies ... but it does give you the building blocks from which to work on.

I also got the tapes that you can buy with the book, although found them very disappointing - the person pretty much just reads the lists of words/sentences in the book. A more imaginative/useful and better quality audio program could be produced to supplement what is a very useful book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful tape quality ... not really useable ., September 6, 2001

This review is from: Hugo Language Course: Spanish In Three Months (with Cassettes) (Paperback)
The book is fine .
The course design is quite good .
But the audio quality of the cassettes is really bad .
The set I got had loads of distortion and an irritating clicking sound all the way through in the background .
I would look at it again , only if they would take more care over the audio and do it on CD .

I purchased this book to go along with a spanish language class I was taking. We didn't use the book that much but I found it to be very helpful especially after the class for review. It has lots of review questions and exercises. If I wasn't taking the class, I would have probably ordered the one with the tape so I could hear pronunciations. But this book did a great job with the class.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great way to learn the basics, May 31, 2011

You can't really learn a language in three months but this was an excellent course to learn the basics of the Spanish language. This was one of my first really good Spanish language resources that actually helped me a lot. It's also an excellent review resource for anyone who already knows some Spanish and wants to improve their rusty language skills.

This course doesn't over explain grammar (which is a huge turnoff). Instead, it just explains each part of the language clearly and concisely. You're given either one or just a few examples, which helps you learn.

The conversations are very good and show you how to use what you've learned to speak and understand Spanish.

This is probably my favorite resource for my occasional "brush up" and was an excellent course when I began learning the language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good review, January 6, 2009
If I didn't already know Spanish, this book would be difficult to use. But as a Spanish speaker, I love this book because it is an excellent review of what you should have learned in class. If you memorize most of the material in this short book, your understanding of Spanish grammar will be pretty solid. If you are a beginner, I would recommend using this book along with a program that focuses on learning to speak. Use Pimsleur to learn to speak and use this book to understand the rules.
