What is Valentine's Day all about? For the young kids in Hugs and Hearts, it's chocolate candy, homemade valentines, cookies, and teddy bears. Simple verses are paired with bright photographs in this little book from the cofounder of Black Books Galore, Toni Trent Parker, and photographer Earl Anderson. African American readers will be delighted to see their faces reflected in the photos of boys and girls celebrating Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, the pictures are combined with somewhat forced rhymes:

Mmm! A box of chocolates
Yum, yum, yum!
Mom said she would share them
and give me some.
