Book Description

May 16, 2003
The Hulk returns in the only official novel to accompany the new film. Created in 1962 by Stan Lee for Marvel Comics. The Hulk has earned a place amongst the very few tasting comic-book superheroes. From this beginning came The Incredible Hulk TV series of the late 1970s starring Bill Bixby. Now, in summer 2003 the legend is to return in a dramatic big-screen adaptation that takes The Hulk back to his classic roots. Directed by Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and starring Eric Bana (Black Hawk Down) and Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), this will be a completely modern interpretation of the original Hulk story. The Hulk is depicted as a superhero and a monster, a wish fulfillment and a nightmare, and is projected into the dangers and aspirations of contemporary times. This is the novel of the must-see movie of 2003.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This well-done abridgement packs the plot twists, character development and pulse-pounding action of David's novel (adapted from the screenplay of the upcoming movie) into a tight, fast-paced tale. Barred from experimenting on human subjects, scientist David Banner does experiments on himself that cause mutations he later passes on to his son Bruce. David hammers home to little Bruce that he must never ever get angry, because bad things will happen if he does. Years later, a scientist himself, Bruce is accidentally blasted with gamma rays in an experiment gone wrong, and the combination of the rays and his mutation turn him into the green-skinned, bestial Hulk. Reader Strathairn treats the story seriously, without any hint of comic book camp, which allows listeners to feel for the characters and believe in the story. Strathairn also does a good job using his voice to differentiate the characters: blustering General "Thunderbolt" Ross, controlled and repressed Bruce, smarmy Glen Talbot, increasingly mad David Banner, and Betty Ross, Bruce's concerned fellow scientist and love interest.

From the Inside Flap

From acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee,
a dark vision of the beast that lives inside the man . . .

In a Berkeley lab, Bruce Banner, a young man haunted by his murky past and the parents he never knew, works intensely day and night. A bright scientist with repressed emotions and few social skills, Bruce and his colleague, the sharp and beautiful Betty Ross, experiment with the body?s ability to repair itself and fight disease. But their research draws unwanted attention. For the power of regeneration catches the eye of the military, which sees its potential on the battlefields of the future.

But when Bruce is exposed to radiation in an accident that should have killed him, a ferocious truth about his past begins to emerge?along with something else, something deep inside his own body that is triggered when he is provoked . . . when he is pushed beyond reason . . . when anger takes over and he transforms into . . .

THE HULK

5.0 out of 5 stars The HULK Novel is EXCELLENT........, May 13, 2003
This review is from: Hulk (Mass Market Paperback)
You can definitely differentiate between the Novel and the TV Series The Incredible HULK and as a result, the Novel is definitely more closer to the Comic, the way the HULK is supposed to look and act.. So what if there were some minor changes compared to the comics, Comic Purists will never be happy no matter how good the movie is and it will be.. My Recommendation: If you need more familarity with the character the HULK, Pick up this Novel today.. The scene with the Hulk Dogs was actually described in brutal fasion and I could play out the entire book in my head and visualize every scene and I have come to the conclusion that this movie will be very emotional, and you know what?? That's a Good thing.. This is sort of like A Beautiful Mind meets A Beautiful Monster type of story.. Audiences love a good story and this is what will sell this movie the most: The STORY and FX come 2nd.. Perhaps The Matrix Reloaded won't be the mvoe to beat this Summer, but instead, it's The HULK!!

3.0 out of 5 stars SMASH the anger!, August 25, 2003
By
This review is from: Hulk (Mass Market Paperback)
Peter David, the acclaimed comic book writer that revitalized The Hulk, adapts the maligned movie into a decent novel. The Hulk takes its sweet time showing up, but the characters and their backstories are well drawn enough to make the wait worthwhile. There are some minor changes in character and motivation, especially in regards to Glen Talbot, and, for the most part, it helps the story more than hinders it (though there are a few narrative wrinkles that another rewrite could have ironed out). Not a bad book at all, fans will certainly enjoy it.
