Morrisey goes Visual...,
By
This review is from: Hulmerist [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The Smith's were one of the 80's most provocative bands. Steve Morrisey's departure into solo proves both musically powerful and visually appealing. Morrisey's "Hulmerist" is indeed fun to watch. Favorite Morrisey songs such as "Last of the International Playboys," "Ouija Board," and "Interesting Drug" are on here. They show Morrisey much the romantic that is not readily evident on his music. Too, his selection of Directors is quite noteworthy. Unlike the modern glamourboy images so prevelent on MTV, Morrisey looks very common as his followers. The fan footage, though sometimes drawn-out, shows his appeal in the UK. Clearly this video is an excellent buy for those who enjoyed Morrisey's earlier solo days. What better than to see it on your TV!

Passions and the Passionate,
This review is from: Morrissey: Hulmerist (DVD)
"Hulmerist" is a collection of seven Morrissey music videos, all directed by a guy named Tim Broad, woven together with footage of Morrissey fans during the early days of his solo career (late 1980s, early 1990s). I'm a pretty big fan of Morrissey, and I quite enjoyed this little package.
I think Tim Broad does a really good job at capturing Morrissey's passions and obsessions, both lyrically and in his life, by way of the videos. Almost all the main themes of Morrissey's songs are here: bored youth (the teenage girl in "Every Day is Like Sunday"), unemployment (the big haired woman in protest in "Interesting Drug"), the love of old actors and writers (Morrissey's vigil at James Dean's grave in "Suedehead"), animal rights ("Interesting Drug"), we even see an aspiring boxer (in "The Last of the Famous International Playboys". The linking footage of the fans, lined up in queues, chanting Morrissey's name and being frisked by security, shows how intense and overwhelming the scene that surrounded Morrissey at the time. I'd always heard, by way of fan websites and such, that Morrissey had to put up with a lot of junk going on at his concerts. Now I've seen the video for "Sister I'm A Poet" I know exactly what they mean. Young men in a constant barrage jumping onto the stage to touch Morrissey, to hug him, to drag him away. It's amazing that Morrissey can keep on singing the song with all this happening to him, I reckon. What a showman! I'd say this DVD would be a great introduction to Morrissey and his world. You could pop it on, show a friend what he's all about pretty quickly (the DVD goes for a little over 46 minutes). It would have been nice if there was more footage, and it would have been nice to have some special features, but what is there is fantastic. Recommended.

Finally found this vid... lost my copy years ago which was v annoying as I'm in the video!!!.. the live stuff was filmed at Wolverhampton Civic Hall (nr Birmingham UK).. queued for about 9 hrs to get in, the gig was free is you wore a Smiths t-shirt. Can't rememeber which tune it is, but the camera zooms right in on my face.. my only claim to fame.. apart from touching Morrissey's foot during the performance!!... outstanding stuff...

A must-have item for any Morrissey fan,

I bought this video years ago when I was in college, and it's a collector's item for Morrissey fans. Not only does it feature his videos up to 1990, it also contains footage from his very famous Wolverhampton gig. Plus, it also has the video to the much-maligned single "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" which does not apppear on his new DVD compilation. There's no telling when Mozzer will return with a new CD (at the time of this writing, he has no record contract on either side of the Atlantic), but until then, fans new and old should go out of their way to pick up this winner.

Got Morrissey?,

This is an all too short compilation of the Moz's videos. There is also excerpts of some very enthusiastic concert-goers.A must for any Morrissey fan. His visuals are as complex as his lyrics and are quite stimulating and often very funny!

This DVD contains some video clips that I guess will be pretty hard to find nowadays. For a Morrissey fan, these are shivering songs, and it's amazing to see these videos now (especially if you never seen them before, like me).

The Best Video Collection Ever,
This review is from: Hulmerist (DVD)
I had this on VHS in college. My friend and I would watch it every afternoon while splitting a bottle of red wine (ah, the alcoholic afternoons...) It never gets old. It is a masterpiece. If you're a Mozza fan, it's a must, and if you're not, you will be after watching it.
