Excellent, Worth the Weight,
By
This review is from: Human Anatomy, 5th Edition (Hardcover)
I am an EMT working on nursing pre-requisites, and I read this book, as well as Anatomy and Physiology for Emergency Care, and Marieb's book on anatomy. This is the best if you take the subject seriously. The large size allows for better graphics, which is important in this field. The text is uniformly excellent. I also like the fact that developmental anatomy (fetal development) is separate, so you can only go to that if you're interested. Lot's of cadaver pics, which are very important in showing that real bodes are not coveniently neon and coordinated colors.
BTW, the other two books mentioned are also good. Marieb offers less material, and the A&P for Emergency Care is for paramedicine. If this area is new to you and you need excellent grades, find a local paramedic A&P class (40 hours), which is the best way to get a head start.

same as the 5th edition almost the same as the 4th-- only $100 more!!,
By JA Hart "Jenn" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Anatomy (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
I used this book for an undergraduate Anatomy course, it is virtually THE SAME as the 5th edition with the exception of a few (four to be exact) pictures. Do you need the new photos?? No. Why? Because they are shown in other parts of the book anyways.
The only other difference is that they "updated" a select few of the "old terms" to "newer terms" (terms NOT widely used or taught) it caused a huge problem when referring to something specific in lectures and labs, our instructor even had our class cross them out or add the more commonly used terms to our books. The book is also massive and very awkwardly shaped; it will not fit into any book bag or backpack ever. Sadly I was one of the only students in my class who's book binding lasted through the semester too--everyone had problems with pages falling out and the binding simply ripping apart. Sad because at over a hundred dollars it should make it through a simple 18 week class!! I worked in a bookstore for years and was shocked as I've never seen that happen to so many people. My advice is to buy an older edition as it's more than half the cost.

This book was required for an Anatomy 1 class. I elected to buy it new through Amazon thinking that it would be the same as the package available from the school bookstore. While I saved about $50.00, I did not receive the CD and the atlas that was packaged with the bookstore version; this fact was not clearly stated in the book description. Otherwise, I have no complaints. Oh wait, yes I do - the book weighs a ton and is very unweildy.

Typical Pearson, planned obsolescence.,

This book just plain stinks. It's outrageously overpriced; you can get Gray's or Netter's for about the same. It's oversized, which makes it incredibly difficult to manage on your desk while studying, turing pages is difficult, and it doesn't fit in your bag with your other books. There are many poorly labeled illustrations; a feature is labeled on one image but not another image of the same bone, etc. You will never use this book after the course you buy it for, because it is not a standard anatomy text, and it is too basic for any advanced course or reference. If you're a premed, try to borrow it or get it used because you will never look at it again.
Another thing: These authors have decided to use new language, new terms for many anatomical features without telling the reader. In many cases they simply drop the age old term for something, and they use a more technical term. Problem is, they don't tell you, they don't give both terms, and most of the academic and medical world uses the traditional term that you will not learn in this lame book. This is just one in a long line of Pearson books that are designed for marketing and sales, not education.

Gets the job done... Way too pricey.,
This review is from: Human Anatomy (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
I liked this book because it had almost all of the information for my undergrad course in Anatomy. But, it's way too damn overpriced. A lot of the information you can find from external sources. Also, you could use an earlier edition, virtually the same + cheaper.

This is a great reference book even for resident physicians. I highly recommend having it in your library of medical books.

This was the assigned textbook for my human structure and performance class. The material is a great in-depth look for students in the pursuing a degree in kinesiology. It's filled with anatomical model pictures and goes into detail with many physiological subjects. It is more specifically tuned to said students than your normal Anatomy book (Marieb, etc.)
However, do not purchase the international version. I was duped by an online seller advertising this hardbound book, but to my dismay, I received the shoddy paperback version. Pages have already initiated their escape from the grasps of the inferior binding.

Quality of book:awful,

The material in the book is great and very useful, but the condition the book has acquired over the month was not expected. Not even a month has pasted and my book has completely come unbounded and is very unpleasing to flip threw pages that are not attached to the book. The quality of the book(glue bound) is very poor and one could see that it was not worth the money.
I did receive the book late, due to the holiday(4th of July), which is understandable, but falling apart within a month not acceptable at all.

Eh,
This review is from: Human Anatomy (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
The text is difficult to understand, however the pictures, especially in regards to the skeletal and muscular system are good.

Really love this book, jam-packed with loads of info, easy to understand and divided into chapters for the different body systems. Great text for anyone studying anatomy for medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, biology and Cardiac technology like myself. Diagrams and pictures are well-labelled and the function of the organs/tissues is easy to comprehend as most of the pictures and texts are really detailed.
