3.0 out of 5 stars Too much detail
The book is OK, but has too much detail of the human anatomy for this "wannabe" artist. In my opinion, it is better suited for medical students.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the huge detailed illustrations, September 13, 2009

Length:: 0:25 Mins

Human Anatomy for Artists by Andras Szunyoghy is a rather thick anatomy reference book at 496 pages. It's loaded with huge detailed pencil illustrations. They are really big and a pleasure to look at.

The examples are shown in all positions, top and bottom whenever necessary. There are drawings of individual muscles as well as when they are layered on top one another. Every new page takes a bit of the previous and builds on it, all the way to the end. Every part of the bones and muscles are very clearly illustrated. Because of the multiple angles, one can really get a good sense of the form. I'm pretty sure anyone can be a master at anatomy after drawing everything in the book.

There are not much text in the book except for the labeling of muscles and parts.

While the book has some drawings of bending body parts, you'll really learn more on posing with figure drawing books. With the knowledge provided here, figure drawing will be a breeze.

This is a very useful anatomy reference book for any artists. The huge illustrations is a really big plus.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best anatomy book ever!!, October 20, 2005

I've worked for companies such as Walt Disney Animation and Fox Studios. This book was constantly used and referred to in our work and studies there. If you only buy one anatomy book, BUY THIS ONE! There are a few books with this title out. Make sure you get the one by Andras Szunyoghy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Insanely detailed!, August 21, 2002
By
This review is from: Human Anatomy - For Artists - (Hardcover)
Although i've never heard of this book, it was evidently better then others. I browsed through it in the book store and found clear pencil drawings, good text and surprisingly detailed content. There are many pages and many illustrations for each part of the body. Different muscle layers are covered as well as bones(front, back, side, above and underneath views for each!) and movement.
Its week side is lack of muscle effects on the skin, so you'll have to get a figure drawing book for that. In addition, a new reader might get lost(as i did) with the new jargon and muscle names, but you get used to it.
Oh, and there are many muscles and bones that no artist will ever need to draw, so if it's not what you're looking for, there are cheaper alternatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars dramatically improved my drawing, July 31, 2007
By
Within 2 weeks of looking at the illustrations in this book, my figure drawing skills have improved by at least 60 percent.
The illustrations are so clear and complete that it is very easy to see how to draw the figure or any part of it you may be interested in.
It especially helped me with drawing the female breasts, a difficult subject for me for a long time. But seeing clearly the muscles that are under the breast made all the difference for me.
There are over 1200 illustrations in this book...all aimed at teaching the artist how to see the body and how it is made.
The writer and illustrator of this book have my eternal gratitude.

5.0 out of 5 stars End your search. This really is the best option., July 1, 2009
I borrowed this from a friend for a year. Afterwards, I tried to find a replacement, but this is the best book for muscles and bones. It has everything, but illustrated clearly. I am now a hemiplegic and I use the book for muscle awareness in my physical therapy. The med students's book, the Netter, is way, way, too detailed with organs. This is the best, really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only for Artists, May 19, 2001

This is the most thorough and easy to understand anatomy book I have used. It covers the skeletal muscles of the human body. Anyone interested in the body's form and function would find this useful. As a Massage Therapist I have increased my skills by studying from this text. The drawings are clear. The origins, insetions and functions are minutely covered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Reference book For Drawing!!!, November 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been recommending this to everyone interested in an anatomy book. This book was one of the best purchases I have made, as an aspiring artist. The price was un beatable and the book came to me super fast! There is so much detail, all drawn in pencil, there are pictures of every bone, muscle and their connection points. There are drawings of fully skinned, partially skinned with muscle and bone, and all skeleton references.

As an artist and bookseller I have not been able to find a better artistic anatomy book. There are one or two better ones, available in Europe, but not in the US. This is your best option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference for Artists, August 9, 2008
I am a 3D Modeler and this is the book I use extensively for reference while modeling and especially while sculpting in Z brush. The book is nice and large packed with nice and detailed sketches. I would recommend adding your own tabs to the pages you use most for reference as it is a very large and heavy book.
