About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field–including those of former students, now in health careers–that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology¨ CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Sigma Xi. Human Anatomy & Physiology, Ninth Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Dr. Katja Hoehn is an instructor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada. Dr. Hoehn's first love is teaching. Her teaching excellence has been recognized by several awards during her 14 years at Mount Royal College. These include a PanCanadian Educational Technology Faculty Award (1999), a Teaching Excellence Award from the Student’s Association of Mount Royal College (2001), and the Mount Royal College Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award (2004).

Dr. Hoehn received her M.D. (with Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan, and her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Dalhousie University. In 1991, the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation presented her with the Max Forman (Jr.) Prize for excellence in medical research. During her Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies, she also pursued her passion for teaching by presenting guest lectures to first- and second-year medical students at Dalhousie University and at the University of Calgary

Dr. Hoehn has been a contributor to several books and has written numerous research papers in Neuroscience and Pharmacology. She oversaw the recent revision of the Interactive Physiology modules, and co-authored the newest module, The Immune System. She has also played a large role in the development of A&P Flix™ animations and the Video Tutors in MasteringA&P, serving as a consultant and academic reviewer.

Dr. Hoehn is also actively involved in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). When not teaching, she likes to spend time outdoors with her husband and two boys, compete in triathlons, and play Irish flute.

I purchased this book a few semesters ago and it is a great text book. This text book you will want to keep for future references.

With that said.. Do yourself a favour and just get the past edition. I returned my 9th edition. I just do not see the justification to charge someone almost $200 for a new book when the previous edition is almost the exact same, with just replacing of pictures. The 8th Edition can be purchased for less than $15 bucks here on amazon (ISBN-10: 0805395695 ).

I am pretty certain that most college students are pretty much on the verge of being broke, or soon to be for that matter. Always try to get the previous edition if you can, your save a lot of money, around 1/5 the price. These publishers just drive me nuts, I understand they need to make money, but come on, most of these books are never completely rewritten and they come out with a new edition every 2-3 years and those editions like this one, are almost exactly the same, except for replacement of pictures and a few updated stories/examples. It seems crazy how a book that is just two years old seems to be considered no longer usable.

*Update*: For most A&P students, your cover the first chapter all the way to the nervous system. In A&P II your probably start with the Endocrine System.

Your professor may require you to get Mastering A & P. This requires that you use a on-line website that allows you to take some tests, quizzes and other exams. Getting the older book, will save you money, so you will be able to purchase the other software. The access code is $55, if you want the eText/eBook included, then it is $110 and that will include the 9th edition. The My Mastering A & P website, is good for 1 year.

I assumed that since this was a new product it would include the Mastering CD. However, it does not. Don't buy this textbook if you need to do the mastering homework for class. I do need the mastering software and now I do not have it. A BIG problem. Please advertise this, Amazon!!! people need to know!!

This book did not include the mastering a and p website access which is an additionial $40.00 I believe. Plus if you do purchase the access to masteringaandp.com an online copy of the book is provided!!! Wish I wouldn't have purchased this it ended up costing me more in the end. Buyer beware.

This was a required textbook for my college Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) 2-semester series. I have just completed the first semester and will soon be taking the 2nd semester one. I had the choice of buying a regular book from the college's bookstore or getting the Kindle version from Amazon. I opted for the Kindle version as the regular textbook is large and heavy.

The textbook appears to be the de-facto standard text for most A&P courses around the country. The text seems to be well-written and pleasantly readable which is relatively unusual for textbooks in my opinion. The illustrations and images are very good. Having the Kindle version offers you the ability to adjust text size and to magnify the illustrations and images and magnifying them does not pixellate them until you've magnified them past a certain large size - a pleasant surprise to me.

The book offered excellent images of the bones and muscles, allowing you to more easily identify the locations and positions of the various muscles and their relative depth. The search tool was of immense value to me to quickly find information.

If you're taking A&P and your professor is using this textbook, rest assured that through using this book you will learn a lot of A&P.

Requires the utmost in concentration. If you've never taken an A&P course before, this book can be a difficult read, as 90% of the information will be new to you, and ALL of it will be important and required to be memorized, as the course/subject builds upon itself. There are plenty of EXTREMELY HELPFUL DIAGRAMS. Certain chapters could be better presented, but all in all, a good book, so long as you take the time to process the information. My main issue is the time allotted by my professor to read and comprehend it. It can be a bad case of information overload. Take your time.
