One of my favorite school books (if that's possible),

I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.

This book is identical to her previous ed. with Apolo Anton Ohno on it. All she has done to this newer book with Williams on it is to add about 3 pages, changed her color coding, ISBN # and cover photo. You spend about $50 more for a book that is identical in contents to one you can easily find on e bay for so much less.

They got it right with this one...,

This book is a fabulous learning tool. The authors really seem to understand what parts need detailed explanation and the information is presented in a way that a student can grasp it easily.
I am a student of A&P 1 and have a high A in class because of the quality of the info in the book (as a supplement to lecture, of course).

This book is part of my massge therapy curriculum and has been my best tool yet.
If there's something I am not getting from the lecture or something I want some more detail on, this book has got it and has got all the juice on it. I feel this book would be a valiable reference for anyone in the medical feild.

Highly detailed A&P approach.,

I bought it while taking medical courses for pre-medical/pre-nursing program. I took both A&P courses at my college, as well as Tutored A&P 1. This book is a classic in its genre and I was happy to have a course that used it.
A&P is the calculus of the introductory medical courses. It requires a lot of studying time to pass, and a comprehensive learning approach in order to exceed. A&P 1 usually covers organs, while A&P covers systems of the human body. This book usually goes for both A&P courses. Chances are the book you buy will be dictated by book requirements for the course, so I think book selection is not the main focus for A&P book buyers. Using the book optimally, is. This book by Marieb is very comprehensive. Even the summaries at the end of the chapter that span 2-3 pages of three column bullets. It is very in depth, and I recommend a simpler book to go along with this volume, as it jumps into convoluted details rather quick. A few lessons I learned for success in A&P seies: 1)A&P is usually a transferable course. So consider taking it at a local community college at a significant discount. 2)The editions of these books are essentially the same. Consider buying an older edition at a significant discount and using that. My book cost me $10 including shipping, and was 2 editions earlier than what other students used in the class. 3)Buy another book with simple descriptions and overviews. For me "Anatomy Coloring Book" was it. It took a paragraph or two to explain how an organ or a system functions. I can then organize information better from Marieb's book. 4)Meet your teacher before class begins. This will give you an idea of how the class will be structured. 5)Join a study group. A regular, focused study group will give you support and provide a new method of learning, which will improve memory connections. 6)See the tutoring support you college offers for this course. The earlier students came to me, the more beneficial it was for them. Try to get excited about A&P. It should take a lot of study time and can be a fun experience.

My first copy of Marieb's Anatomy and Physiology (4th Edition - 1997) was a gift. Even though I was too young to get into the nitty gritty of physiology at that time, I wore out the chapters on skeletal and muscular anatomy. Since then, this book has been one of my most prized reference texts. I refuse to part with my 4th edition which has served me well for so many years but I finally decided to update and get the 7th edition.
This is a fantastic text. The chapters have been updated to reflect the latest findings (ie: genetics) and the artwork is top-notch. Most importantly, the organization of the information is outstanding, making it very readable and a very reliable quick reference. There is an appropriate level of detail for undergraduate students as well as graduate/professional students. The text would not be overwhelming for a high-school age student if they are very interested in the subject. I have given other A&P texts a thorough review and none stand close to this work. You can expect future editions to continue improving, as Dr. Marieb has shown a real commitment to keeping this the top book on the market.

Anatomy & Physiology was really difficult for me... but with this book and the study guide (which wasn't used at my school but I got on my own) made a HUGE difference in learning the information. The book made the subject interesting and you wanted to learn more. It had helpful tips and analogies for remembering key points. I like the book alot and was able to pull off a "B" which for me was wonderful. The study guide is a helpful tool that I think is a "must have" to go with this book if science is a challenging subject for people.Human Anatomy & Physiology (Study Guide)

First let me say that Human Anatomy and Physiology is not an easy subject. I'm a good student and I appreciate a good textbook. The level of detail in this text is very good. The problem is the way the author presents it. First because there is so much detail, it would be helpful if the author had indicated some way to discern the trivial from the essential. Do I have to master every detail? Second, the information is given in a chatty style of writing. That's fine but it takes too long to piece together the relevant details when they're scattered non-linearly around the page. And time is what you don't have when you're studying A & P. Third, the author doesn't know when to end a chapter. Sometimes it felt like she was getting paid by the word. Or perhaps she was trying to stay ahead of her competition and didn't want to miss including every bit of info however trivial, if her competition was including it in their textbook. Fourth, the author tended to use substitute terms for the same thing - way before the topics were presented in later chapters. For instance, neuron, cell body, and soma all mean the same thing - and once I got to the nervous system section, it became very basic. But way back in epithelium, connective tissue, and muscles it confused the heck out of me. Marieb does this a lot, probably to keep her writing from becoming tedious and boring. But, it's a text book - it's perfectly okay to be tedious if it makes things easier to understand!

Although our professor barely used the book for class, this book was very well laid out, starts off at a good pace and is easy to understand. I especially enjoyed the case studies in real life anatomy problems and real world applications of what we learned. The only part I didn't like is the author's prolouge, which seemed a little inflated and overzealous?

Absolutely WONDERFUL Book!!,
This review is from: Human Anatomy & Physiology (7th Edition) (Hardcover)
I'm 45 and decided to go back to school to become a nurse. I haven't been in school since 1987, so I was a bit nervous.
Anatomy & Physiology I was the fist class I signed up for and this was the book we had to get. I can't tell you how wonderful a learning tool this book is (and the corresponding lab book). Sure, I'm in a different mind set now than I was at 19 (in the 1980's), but this book is written extremely well. The class is hard, but the text AND especially the diagrams and photos are so helpful. I got an A in A&P I, and have an A+ in A&P II right now. It's weird, but I am going to miss this class when it's over. Kudos to the writers of this book!! |
