About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field—including those of former students, now in health careers—that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology¨ CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Sigma Xi. Anatomy & Physiology, Second Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Katja Hoehn is an instructor in the Department of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Sciences at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada. She received her M.D. (with Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan, and her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Dalhousie University. Dr. Hoehn has been a contributor to several books and has written numerous research papers in Neuroscience and Pharmacology.  In 1991, the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation presented her with the Max Forman (Jr.) Prize for excellence in medical research.  During her 11 years at Mount Royal College, Dr. Hoehn has received numerous awards including a PanCanadian Educational Technology Faculty Award (1999), a Teaching Excellence Award from the Student’s Association of Mount Royal College (2001), and the Mount Royal College Distinguished Faculty Teaching award (2004).  She is also actively involved in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money!, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Human Anatomy & Physiology with IP-10 CD-ROM (7th Edition) (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book. However the reason I gave it an eye catching 1 star with 'Save Your Money' tag is because I think it is best to get the older version or the 6th edition. The 6th ed. is the blue and white cover book with Apolo Ohno on it. It will be much cheaper than the 7th ed. I checked the 6th ed. out of my library while waiting on my 7th ed. to come in the mail. When my 7th ed. Serena Williams came in the mail, I decided to go thru both books at the same time and see for myself if there were any differences or variations. The only real differences that I found was of course the huge price difference, change of cover photo and just a tad bit more pages, but the most important thing is that both books are the exact same thing from beginning to end with the exact illustrations. I know that alot of the 7th ed.s come with the IP or Interactive Physiology cd. Truth is, alot of professors will give this IP to you for free if you ask. They have their own password that you can use, or you can purchase this IP cd set on ebay for a fraction of the cost. Save money!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Used" Book in Great Condition, October 5, 2009

I was hesitant about buying a book over the internet but the book I purchased was in great condition. I had purchased a "used" book in the midrange price and asked for priority shipping. The book didnt even look like it had ever been used and was in great condition. I paid 1/3 the price they were asking for from the college bookstore. The book arrived 5 days after I purchased it, including the weekend and a Holiday on Monday. Human Anatomy & Physiology with IP-10 CD-ROM (7th Edition)

3.0 out of 5 stars Screw getting the newer edition, June 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Human Anatomy & Physiology with IP-10 CD-ROM (7th Edition) (Hardcover)
I previously purchased the e-book of the 9th edition of this book for my first section of A&P and absolutely hated it. Only one slow loading page at a time could be viewed. On top of that, most of the info was presented in the lab manual, but MORE concise! I only purchased the e-book for one semester as even in that crap form it was freaking expensive.

I don't mind reading a good story leisurely on the computer, but I haven't been able to tolerate reading any textbooks, aside from chemistry, on them. So, I ordered the older edition for less than 1/3 of the original and cheaper than the one-semester e-book. And it's the.same.book. Same illustrations. Same everything, except for a cover change and a different color palet.

Save that cash, for when you're degreed and unemployed like me(getting even more degrees :-P)!
