About the Author

Heather Manley was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. She studied biology at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. Initially she focused on wildlife conservation and animal biology, however, with some exposure to naturopathic medicine, this health care philosophy rang true for her. She switched to pre-med and graduated in 1993 and earned her doctorate from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon before moving with her family to Hawaii where she became licensed and continues to practice today. She began her writing once her children were born and realized the importance of teaching them, by example, about healthy food and lifestyle. Telling them what to eat was not enough, so she created and wrote educational adventure stories that have evolved into the Activity Workbook and Audio CD Human Body Detective series and now in picture story book format!

More About the Author

Dr. Heather Manley, ND, is a practicing physician who received her medical degree in 2001 from National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She is also the award-winning author of The Human Body Detectives book and curriculum series.

A contributing writer to Dandelion Moms, Organic Eats magazine, Parents Canada, and KIWI magazine, Dr. Heather was inspired to write The Human Body Detectives stories when she went on a search for books about healthy eating tips for parents and kids and couldn't find what she was looking for. She wanted to provide a fun and engaging resource that would teach kids about how their bodies work and what foods best feed them. And the HBDs were born.

The Human Body Detectives series won Moms' Choice Award and is also a Parent Tested, Parent Approved winner. Dr. Heather has been named to the Top 50 Mompreneurs Bloggers List on both Babble , VoiceBoks and blogtrepreneur

Dr. Heather lives and practices on the Big Island of Hawaii, where her focus is on preventative healthcare for families and providing a resource for families to learn more about preventative health care so that they can be confident and proactive in their everyday health. She lives with her husband and her two daughters, with whom she based her stories' characters, Merrin and Pearl.

Dr. Heather is currently at work writing another Human Body Detectives adventure, an imaginative journey through the brain and nervous system.

Format: Paperback
This series is wonderful! Dr. Manley's extensive knowledge of human anatomy and nutrition is the foundation upon which the entire series is based, but she seamlessly integrates this information into kid-friendly stories that are both educational and exciting. What would be a dull lecture on the circulatory system in any textbook is instead an exciting adventure that takes readers through the bodies by way of extensive illustrations and fun dialogue. This series is a must for any school library, and I would also highly recommend it to parents of children who are not science-inclined. Audiotapes, available for each book, are also provided. Very highly recommended!!

As a mom I feel is very important to teach our children about making healthy choices. I was excited to have the opportunity to review this entire series, and was very impressed with all of the information that was compacted into these stories. Anytime you get a nine year old saying "Oooh gross, keep reading!" I'd say it's captured their attention.
The book series targets ages 6-10. I would have to say this is a very accurate age range. Any younger or older, and they may loose interest. This entire series is perfect for home school and classrooms.
