More About the Author

I trained in London as a physician after Peace Corps teaching (VSO) in the jungles of Sarawak, Borneo.I had intended to become a surgeon but was side-tracked into anatomy after writing "Clinical Anatomy of Practical Procedures". This led to a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Iowa.I was Clinical Anatomist at UCL (London) for 15 years and then held the Clinical Anatomist post at The University of Cambridge (UK) before moving to the new Chair of Clinical Anatomy at Warwick Post-Grad Medical School in 2007.I am a Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge and also do a couple of days a week in "real metropolitan, innner city medicine" as an NHS family practitioner in London.I worked as an anatomical consultant for WHO in Alexandria and Geneva, and have examined and lectured doctors and surgeons worldwide.Since 1993 I've been a Professor at St. Georges University, Grenada where I'm known for my passions of Scuba ,jungle hiking and lecturing on the history of art.Since 2005 I have been associated with Pretoria University, South Africa where one of my co-authors works. In 1997 I was awarded the BMA electronic publishing prize and the IAMS prize for "Interactive Skeleton" CD-ROM. In 2005 with Craven and Lumley won The Richard Asher Prize from the Royal Society of Medicine, London for the best new medical text book.My major works include the McMinn "Clinical Atlas of Human Anatomy" now in its 6th edition which won the BMA book award 2008 and with Weir "Imaging Atlas of Human Anatomy" now in its 4th edition. In 2006 the American Associstion of Clinical Anatomists recognized my contributions as its "Honoured Member" - "for authorship of anatomical textbooks and electronic resources in many languages" In 2007 I moved to Warwick post-graduate medical school where I was awarded the top teaching award ( WATE) in my first year. Last year I received an educational grant of 2.0 million dollars from government with which I have recently set up the West Midlands Surgical Training Centre which is a cadaver operative suite and plastinate teaching centre for all international health professionals.

This review is from: The Human Body: A Fascinating See-Through View of How Our Bodies Work (Hardcover)
I love this book! We are using it for an overview of the body systems for my 5th grade homeschooler, along with "Head to Toe Science" by Jim Wiese (quick human body experiments, separated out by body system). The see-through diagram is great - not too complicated, but detailed enough to be realistic. We have been using those pictures for tracing/sketching. I would put this book at a 5th grade (or maybe middle-school?) level. It is to the point, but is brief (2 pages per system), so should be considered as an overview and not a detailed study.
