Visually engaging and effective,

This review is from: Human Body (DK Guides) (Paperback)
Note that there are several books by Richard Walker dealing with the human body, so it's easy to get them mixed up. My review refers to the DK "Guide to the Human Body" with the subtitle "a photographic journey through the human body" (the Amazon image doesn't show this subtitle, but the book is the same).
What differentiates this book from the many other good books on the human body is its large format and abundant use of excellent color photographs, including many microscopic photographs which show details of tissues and cells. The narrative and captions accompanying the photographs are also good, although they just emphasize key points rather than aiming for the systematic and comprehensive approach of a textbook. I read this book to my daughter when she was 7 years old, explaining things as appropriate, rather than reading the text verbatim (which means that I both added and skipped information). The book was a very effective teaching tool when used this way, with my daughter being quite engaged and managing to learn and retain a lot of detailed information (more than I expected). I imagine that the book would also be useful for older children (and adults) to read on their own. Highly recommended for teaching children the basics of the human body in a visually engaging way.

The book was bought for my 7 years old boy. He has been asking for a Human Body book for a while. The user's reviews helped me decided to buy this one. To my supprise, my son was not so excited to read the book at all. Maybe the book is difficult for his grade. It might take another year to get him to read it. Anyway, I read it myself and I think it has the basic concepts of a human body and good for all ages (my 2 years old looked the pictures and asked questions too).

I got this for my grand-children. It was the best I could find on Amazon for 8-11 year old kids. No complaints, but it could have been better in covering basic functions such as digestion. Digestion is the perfect place to start when educating kids about their bodies.

This book is an ok book but it wasn't what I was expecting. I bought this book for my medical terminology and basic medical emergency classes. It was more about eveolution than anything else.
