I'm only Human,
By Protegé (Jackson, MS USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human (Audio CD)
This album is absolutely amazing! Brandy's vocals soar to new heights as she pours her heart into the music. It's so great to have her back on the scene! "Human" is just another example of why so many people in the industry - legends, producers, writers, peers - respect Brandy and have publicly declared their admiration of her talent. Now, on to this review!
1. Intro - A spoken definition of what being human means to Brandy. I would have preferred a musical intro, but a simple spoken intro fits with Brandy's personality as well. 2. The Definition - CLASSIC Brandy & Darkchild collabo! A thumping, mid-tempo anthem where Brandy proclaims that she's made the greatest discovery of mankind. Indeed! It's one of my favorites. 3. Warm It Up (With Love) - A heart-felt mid-tempo. This song really puts you in a good, hopeful mood. As the song progresses, more drums and bass are added. Album Highlight for me. 4. Right Here (Departed) - The first single. This song was an instant classic for me. Another song that has inspirational undertones as Brandy's voice conveys so much emotion! 5. Piano Man - YESSS!!! This is definitely one of my favorites on the album. The beat is amazing; it pulsates along with a piano as Brandy pays homage to her and Rodney Jerkins' chemistry and ability to create meaningful music. I hope this is a single. 6. LD Interlude - Brandy chats with her long distance beau. The conversation ends rather abruptly and it just breaks my heart! 7. Long Distance - The second single. This is a classic ballad that one could see the likes of Whitney Houston singing. Brandy's voice sounds immaculate here. 8. Camouflage - A definite highlight! This song really hits home for a lot of people. Brandy's voice shines over this pop gem. The end of the song includes a "choir" of Brandy's vocals as she shows off her superior runs/rifts. I feel it should be a single! 9. Torn Down - a laid back mid-tempo. The song speaks of a love that can't be torn down by the naysayers! 10. Human - This is the title track. This ballad displays Brandy's voice at center stage. This is absolutely one of the best vocals on the album! Brandy truly sings this from the heart. We're only human, we all make mistakes. 11. Shattered Heart - This is a Darkchild production that would have fit in on the "Afrodisiac" album. The beat thumps and shifts throughout as Brandy's haunting vocals plead to not have her heart shattered. 12. True - A beautiful ballad that could have fit in with Never Say Never or Full Moon. Brandy's vocals are very clear here as she hits some amazing falsetto notes! 13. A Capella - WOOOWWW.. There is nothing on this track but Brandy's vocals. Even the guitar sounds are her vocals with an effect on them. This is artistry at it's finest as Brandy declares that something is missing from her life. She sings true baritone notes and sounds like a group all by herself. Props to rising singer/songwriter/producer TC for this gem. 14. 1st and Love - This is a very radio friendly, pretty uptempo joint. has a summery feel to it. 15. Fall - This is a wonderful way to close the album. A piano laced ballad with a thumping beat that is, once again, classic Brandy. She rips the ending with her powerful ad-libs. Another favorite.

Surprise Album of the Year?,
By
This review is from: Human (Audio CD)
Back in 1998, Brandy was sittin' on top of the world, with multi-platinum albums, starring roles in movies, and her own sitcom. Much has changed over the course of that time, but Brandy has remained relatively active on the music scene, but she was unable to match the success of that 1998 album "Never Say Never." Part of tha has been due to the long gap between her albums, and true to form, it has been several long years since her previous album dropped. So here we are all of a sudden, a full decade later, and Brandy sounding more accomplished and seasoned than ever; her music never had embraced the foolishness of the boy and girl band era, nor did her style fit that of those who thought it wise to record ballad after ballad featuring some gangsta rapper doing background vocals. Rather, Brandy has perservered, actually coming up with a set of hooks that not only equal but exceed those of "Never Say Never."
The smooth balladry of "True" and the title track "Human" give only a glimpse of what she can do; the fantastic lead-off single "Right Here (Departed)" and the closing track "Fall" are the highlights of the set, showcasing a wide display of melodic range, with dead-on vocals, including the harmony. Perhaps she has even made Darkchild a better songwriter by delivering such empassioned performances - he has not come up with a set of hooks like this in a long time (maybe not ever before now). In closing, with the shelf-life of a female pop star being as short as it is (J.Lo and Hilary Duff have already come and gone in the time since Brandy's debut), it is truly refreshing to see an artist mature to the point at which everything comes together in one career-defining moment (or in this case, almost a full hour of music). One listen to the stunning a capella portion of "Something's Missing" is enough to convince me that there is a long term future ahead of this bright and somehow still unbelievably young talent. For all those critics who have said that Brandy has had difficulty finding her own sound in the past, take note of the fact that Brandy has responded by taking on about three different types of sounds, and mastered them all. She has finally arrived!

Just Phenominal, Beyond Perfectness!,

I waited paitently. I've been a fan of Brandy since the day she came out with "I Wanna Be Down". I'm so glad to have this album in my hands right now. Brandy is amazing ya'll!
Now, I'm not gonna review every song, because they are far too good. Your voice is extremely remarkable! She has that voice that music missed all these years. Everytime I hear her voice, gives me good chills! I can't even discribe it! I'm loosing my focus (right now) to even explain how great the songs are on this album. But dammnnnn, Brandy tored it up (meaning she aced the vocals) in every friggin' single track on this album. Four year long wait was surly worth a wait. Let me just say that the first intro track, "Human Intro", alone will get people soo interested into Brandy's album. What Brandy said on that track is soo true and really hope a lot of people listen to this album because it's a phenominal album. She puts soo much effort in her music. Every song will reach to the top of the charts. I can't even tell Brandy how proud I am with her. I can't even pick a song that I love the most. If I must pick then it would be "The Defination", "Piano Man", "1rst & Love" and damn, "Human" is a hot track. "Human" is a champion track that should be released! It's the theme!! "A Cappella - (Something's Missing)" is incredible! Love it! Oh my gosh - "Camouflage" is hot! I love "True" sooo much!!I love it. Brandy you are doing it big!!! I'm so glad she's back omg... Brandy is back!! Finally, music matters to me now. The "Long Distance" intro.. had me going into tears!! omg.. it's soo damn good. When she goes, "hello? hello?" omg.. I just felt that pain, I wonder if Brandy actually cried in the studio while making that track because it felt sooo real and I could feel that emotion at the moment. Welcome back Brandy! I can't wait to hear so many singles off the HUMAN album on the radio stations across the globe. "Right Here Departed" was an excellent way to start off and "Long Distance" is such a beautiful song. Your album is going to be a shooting star on the Billboard Charts. Congrats with your 5th "Human" album, Brandy!! We love you. I love you!! Ya'll don't wanna turn you back on this album. Keep this CD in your cars right there with you. Don't be fooled by the fools. Get this album!!! She's back baby! :) Congrats with your 5th "Human" album, Brandy!! We love you. I love you!! -Z

Brandy gives you an album this time around different from any other album shes made or created.I can honestly say that i've never heard this kind of music from any other "r&b" artist in the past ten years. This album gives you a sense of what originality means.Human takes you on a journey through pop,r&b,country, jazz, and ballads...its an amzing production and its definitly relatable.
HIGHLIGHTS:even though the entire album is amazing The Definition Piano Man(a song that has never been done b4) Human(unbelieveable vocals) True(beautiful ballad) A Capella[somethings missing](brandy is making the beat with her own voice and singing over them-amazing) Fall(guarenteed single) ...along with the releases Right Here(Departed) and Long Distance give it a chance if your ready for real original music

Brandy's Back...And This Time, She Means Business,

This review is from: Human (Audio CD)
As someone who has grown up listening to Brandy and her ever-changing style, this album shocked me in ways I never deemed possible. Not only is it a great album, but it might be a contender amongst the top releases of this year. And I am so glad that I have it in my possession.
So many critics stomped ruthlessly on "Afrodisiac," the last studio album released from her back in 2004. It was only right for Brandy to come back stronger and fiercer for "Human." The anticipation of for Brandy's 5th studio album built up from the release of "Right Here (Departed)." From the instant this song hit the airwaves, I knew it meant a triumphant return to Brandy and her melodic alto voice. Every track shows a rather humongous growth in her as an artist and shows that Brandy is an artist to NEVER be underestimated. 5 Stars for the return of Brandy and her album "Human." The wait was well worth it!

Brandy has grown and overcome obstacles that are GROWING PAINS,

This review is from: Human (Audio CD)
Man, I listened to this CD on MTV's LEAK, and when I heard it I just couldn't believe this is the artist that I have listened to since i was 12, and she was 15, now at the age of 26 and she is the age of 29 i feel she has grown and matured into a great singer that she has already been. I have all of her CD's not burnt, but actually bought, "Brandy", "Never Say Never", "Full Moon", "Afrodiasiac", and now "Human". The thing that bothers me so much is how people are comparing Brandy to Beyonce and Rhianna, when Brandy and Monica have been there before all of them. If Brandy was that bad off as an artist or a has been, she still remains relevant, and she wants to sing material she believes in. Us as people are also us as her fans understand what she has been thru with the fake marriage, raising her daughter as a single mother, Ray J's sex tape, breaking off an engagment, and now recently the accident where the media just scrutinized her without having factual evidence. I pray that this album does well, and I am sure it will get nominated for Grammy's, if you really know your Brandy facts all of her albums have been RIAA Certified either gold or platinum, as well as every album has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best R&B album categories. With the state of the industry all about booty shaking and catchy choruses, Brandy has produced a solid album. Even though she is 29, she is a veteran in the game. I believe her and Monica still haven't recieved their respects, but they still remain in the game. People always have things to say but I feel Monica, Brandy, and Usher were those artists that were doing the thing back in the day, and they still are bringing heat. So I will always support whatever Brandy do, because she sings songs that she believe in and what's not going to sound like everything that is on the radio. She will be fine.

She's back!,

This review is from: Human (Audio CD)
Brandy returns with her 5th studio album and her first in over 4 years, "Human". Her last CD, "Afrodisiac" may have been her smallest seller (Gold certification) but it's my favourite brandy CD, mature and fab with production by Timbaland and Kanye West. "Human", as its name implies, is filled with lyrics showing her humanity; contrition, vulnerability, life and love.
Her new disc kicks off after a brief and rather kindergarten (in my opinion) definition of what being a human being means to her, leading into the upbeat "The definition" (the definition of love/is you), which is followed by the piano-tinkled "Warm it up (with love)" and lead-off single "Right here (Departed)". The trio are produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and while pleasant, sound rather dated and like cast-offs from her 2002 Darkchild produced "Full moon" album. "Piano man" with its jittery techno strings and laid back groove sounds very much like Timbaland ("2 man show" from Timbaland's "Shock value" CD). It is actually an ode to Darkchild. From here on, the tempo dips into a stream of ballads; second single the piano ballad "Long distance" (which sounds a bit like Janet Jackson's "Again"), the gently shifting "Human", the stunning "Shattered heart" (with ghostly harmonies and tempo shifts to stomping club beats in parts), the stirring "True" (beautiful song), the rather clever "A Capella (Something's missing)" (as its name implies is a capella with just harmonies, finger snaps and some vocal electric guitar effects in the background. It perfectly showcases the superb vocal layering she's known for), the adorable "1st & love" (with thundering beats in the chorus, my favourite) and closing the Natasha Bedingfield co-penned "Fall" (with interesting drum patterns). The last 5 songs stand out by a mile from the rest of the album. It is good to have Brandy back (Her dusky vocals sound as great as ever) but I think this album is a bit bogged down by some rather ordinary songs ("Camouflage" and "Torn down" sound like they were bought from the same shop Beyoncé got most of the songs on her boring "I am.." disc), and the upbeat songs sound like they have been done before. Still, I hope it can give her the comeback she deserves.

A Comback? Brandy You Were Always Right Here!,
By Musik Monk "Musik Monk" (Bronx, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human (Audio CD)
A phenominal artist, Brandy comes back strong with vocals that will tug at your heart strings, and lyrics that help you get through the day. Back with Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, the albums songs are layered with Brandy's weathered voice and Drakchild's infectious piano beats. She once again proves that quality is what music's about, and she ain't bowing down to anyone to appease them as she declares in "Camoflage".
Standout tracks include "Warm it Up with Love", "Right Here Departed", "Piano Man", "Shattered Heart", "1st and Love", "True", "Fall" and "Long Distance". Radio friendly tracks: "Fall", "Piano Man" We are glad Brandy's is back. She has helped redefine R&B and infused pop with the much needed soul that it lacks. She has us pleading now to see what she has in store for her next album. I give this album a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Wow!!! This is a definition of a real rnb album with heart, emotion, and talent. First off I've always had an appreciation for Brandy's vocal talents, but they have grown to new levels on this album. The harmonies, melodies, lyrics, and themes of this album are nothing less than flawless.
Favorite Tracks: Human - WOW!!! Acapella - ditto!! (Brandy lets her vocals do the work in creating this masterpiece) Shattered Heart Piano Man - Creative melody and lyrics. If you are a vocalist and appreciate great music, GO AND BUY THIS ALBUM ASAP!!! |
