Editorial Reviews

Delain will not only enthrall Symphonic Metal fans with their fourth album The Human Contradiction, but also listeners new to the genre. Extremely catchy refrains, bewitching hooks and melodies, symphonic bombast and of course a good dose of Metal that's how Symphonic Metal has to sound in 2014! Vocalist supreme Charlotte Wessels and her equally talented band colleagues exceeded the highest expectations and have elevated the genre to a whole new level. A redefinition of Symphonic Metal!

Customer Reviews

Lyricaly it's much darker than their previous albums and the music edgier as well.

Charlotte's vocals are again beautiful, and really is what makes this is a good song.

Delain has always shown great potential, getting better and better with each album.

It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than many of the alternatives.

Delain is one of the many bands I feel occupy the second tier of the symphonic metal universe. By that, I do not mean to judge quality - only popularity. It sits among bands such as Leaves' Eyes, Nemesea, Xandria and Amaranthe (to name a few). At the top of this pyramid sits the trifecta of Nightwish, Within Temptation and Epica.

Where do I think Delain should sit? With this album, they're easily one of the best.

The album kicks off with a song I think is good but nothing special. After that, it launches into exciting verses coupled with interesting melodies. I don't care to rate single songs in my reviews as that's too specific to the person. What I can say is that these songs are fairly varied and you probably won't be bored of the sound until the very end. For the record, there are very few male vocals which is probably a good thing.

They do have a bit of a problem with sticking to a theme probably too closely (sort of poppy-metal - which they've had since April Rain). Not a lot of songs break away from this. Each song is different enough to be recognizable if you focus, but if you're doing something else while listening the songs are all going to run together.

That said, they really nail their theme and are probably better at it than the rest of their contemporaries (like Within Temptation specifically, who is a better band overall, even in recent times, due to their songwriting but not as good at the pop-metal they've been attempting recently).

So why still give it 5 stars? The actual album is probably a 4-star effort. However, the band saw fit to include what is perhaps the best song they've ever made as a bonus track on the second CD.

Delain has always shown great potential, getting better and better with each album. Charlotte Wessels has long been one of the best kept secrets in metal; but what set their albums apart from other bands was the incredible production, the detailed mixes, and the passionate performances. The entire band dials it up yet another notch on "Human Contradiction," which picks up right where "We Are the Others" left off. Furthermore, it adds even more melody and aggression, making for a more balanced album with tighter songs. Witness the sheer brilliance of "Your Body is a Battleground," the beauty of "My Masquerade," and the deep metal groove and occasional screams that punctuate "Tell Me, Mechanist." Delain is a band headed in the right direction, expanding their sonic palate and keeping all the original elements that made them great. They are now superior in many ways to a lot of the bands in this genre who paved the way for them. This is a great purchase, not only for the quality of the music here, but for the amount of music you get as well. Two CD's with nine tracks each; a lot of bang for your buck.

As many symphonic metal bands are starting to sell-out and losing their identities (I'm forlornly looking at you, Within Temptation), Delain keeps on getting better. Charlotte's voice is just ethereal and no matter what she is singing, it sounds great. Usually with a Delain album, I find myself skipping two or three songs that are just "meh" but I love this album from beginning to end. There are less ballads on this album, which is fine with me, and more harder sounding songs. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind ballads, but sometimes bands do too many on a single album--not here.

If you like Delain, this album is a no brainer, I listened to it the minute it was released for 3 hours haha! If you've never heard of Delain, well, welcome! Very well done!

It's rare that I can pick a band that's been around for a while and realize that I never heard a tune from them ever before. But when they rock me from the first bar... After buying Interlude a few days ago, I knew I had to have The Human Contradiction, and I was not disappointed at all! Today, I purchased We Are The Others and was blown away as well...

Started out with Evanescence and Lacuna Coil - and the styles and tunes of each band just gets better! Nice looking lead singers aren't bad either. Get Rocked!

Their best album by a wide margin. Doesn't feel like there's any filler here, some of the previous albums I only like 1-2 songs, I'd say I like every single one of the studio tracks here. It really feels like they really got everything right at the same time with this album.

It's pretty downbeat and intense compared to the previous albums, especially April Rain, for me that just highlights how solidly they connected with this album. That doesn't mean they've completely abandoned the pop sound though - some of the songs like army of dolls or don't let go still have that but it's more in a depeche mode direction so it's more engaging and intense than previous efforts.

As owner of only two Delain albums, their first and the one prior to this one, 'Human Contradiction' is the appropriate next album for this band. The lyrics are right, the music is right and the guest artists are right. Delain has become one of my favorite bands. Enjoying it!
