I wandered into a small used bookstore in the mid-sixties and found half a shelf of books by Aurobindo. The Ideal of Human Unity was among them. On the flyleaf was carefully written 'from the library of Margaret Woodrow Wilson, daughter of the President'. In the book was a chapter titled "Toward a League of Nations." Beyond history, I found real magic in Aurobindo's books that fateful day. A poem he penned was among the same collection:
It comes at last, the day foreseen of old, What John of Patmos saw and Shelley dreamed, Vision and vain imagination deemed, The City of Delight, the Age of Gold, The Iron Age is ended. Only now, The last fierce spasm of the dying past Shall strike the nations and when all has passed, Earth washed of its ills shall raise a fairer brow. ~ Sri Aurobindo
