Fairly standard female-fronted symphonic power metal album,
By
This review is from: Human Device (Audio CD)
2004's Human Device is the debut album from Spanish metal band Dreamaker. Formed by ex-members of Dark Moor (including singer Elisa Martin), Dreamaker plays symphonic power metal with some gothic metal elements.
Dreamaker takes a pretty standard approach to this kind of music. Take away the female vocals and you've got a pretty straightforward European power metal album with a very prominent keyboard sound. The keyboards seem designed to replicate Nightwish's sound, but fortunately Martin does not attempt an operatic vocal style. She has plenty of power and range, and it would be interesting to hear her in a more aggressive, traditional metal setting (like Benedictum). The musicianship on Human Device is a match for the vocal performance, but the songwriting and production tend to be repetitious and generic. The album ends up sounding like just about every other band to follow in Nightwish's footsteps. Human Device is a solid enough album, but it's clear Dreamaker is operating at a level (or two) below bands like Edenbridge, After Forever, Epica and Nightwish. If you're a serious fan of female-fronted symphonic metal, or are already a Dark Moor fan, by all means check out Human Device. Just be aware that Dreamaker isn't offering anything you haven't already heard.
