I used this text for a pathology undergraduate course, along with a more complex text (Concise Pathology by Lange). The Mulvihill text did not solidify the concepts; rather, it skimmed over the topics in a cursory manner without giving each topic the attention it needs. A good book for someone with little background in the health sciences, but not enough for anyone who needs something more comprehensive. One plus in this book are the charts at the end of each chapter, which categorize diseases by signs and symptoms, treatment, etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars The book itself is a disease, December 27, 2009

Throughout the entire Fall semester, I was struggling to come to term with the content of the book. When I say struggle, it's because the book is full of typo and contradiction. Like one reviewer mentioned earlier, the "text did not solidify the concepts". The information is so brief that you really don't get much out of it. The online exercises is a joke. Some answers are wrong, making you scratch your head. In one multiple choice question, cervical cancer is caused by monkey virus, not HPV virus. Huh? If it's true, fine. But where in the book is the monkey virus mentioned? The worst is the author's test bank. The questions don't pertain to the book, making it hard for students to follow. I'm halfway into my MA program. I work in the hospital amongst a bunch of MDs. I took some of the questions from the test bank to the MDs and they agreed with my answers, which are marked wrong according to the author. Speaking of MDs, I looked up the authors' panel and was stunned to find only PhDs, MA, Pharm Tech etc. I'm not saying PhDs aren't qualified to write a book. But if it's about diseases and treatments, at least give me one MD on the panel. Pharm Tech I can deal with. Who needs an MA for this book?

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors, July 25, 2011
I have used many Pearson products throughout my nursing program. This book, like other Pearson products, has numerous errors, especially the True/False questions at the end of the chapters. Pearson's desire to provide the most recent, up-to-date information is negated by poor copy editing. Up-to-date information is useless if it's not correct. I'm frustrated with Pearson products in general.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cursory, with lots of mistakes, December 15, 2010

There are a lot of errors with this book.

The details are also pretty cursory and they don't seem to be in touch with a lot of newer findings. For example, the authors seem skeptical that H. pylori is the probably cause of most peptic ulcers.

The CD that comes with this is atrocious. There are a lot of word matching/fill in the blank games. The game will tell you your answer is wrong because the "right" answer is misspelled. The same holds true for variances in capitalization, and sometimes the "correct" answer is not capitalized in accordance with the standards.

Often the official test questions that come with the book, which my professor uses, are not really addressed in the corresponding chapter.

1.0 out of 5 stars Full of contradictions, October 30, 2011
This textbook has to be one of the worst that I have seen as a student. On a first printing, I suppose it's fair to expect some errors or some contradictions, but after the 7th edition, the grace period is over and people are being lazy and irresponsible with the education of our up and coming professionals.

Example - Pg. 309 gigantism in some cases can be cured by surgery along with radiation therapy

Pg. 328,329 - Under "treatment" - it says "None."

This isn't the only one. This is just where I get fed up with reading the textbook. With the goal of becoming excellent at my profession, it is extremely discouraging to not see leadership from those who are supposed to be demonstrating excellence in their field.

I don't know if I am more disappointed in the book, or the fact that I have a professor/college, that has no idea how terrible this book is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good condition, arrived fast., November 18, 2010

This review is from: Human Diseases: A Systemic Approach (6th Edition) (Paperback)
This book showed up pretty fast and was in good condition as promised.

I'm in online-college and instead of printing everything off or reading from my

laptop I chose to buy the book instead, and I have to say I'll be going this route again with my next

courses. The book was cheap and definitely worth it.

Thank you.
