Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The complexities surrounding the diversity of individuals within the entire workforce is the main focus of this new work by the author of The Truth Option (Ten Speed Pr., 1984). Schutz offers a solid perspective which demonstrates that people and process are not mutually exclusive. Clarifying his view of interpersonal workforce relationships by devising a Periodic Table of Human Elements, he argues that self-concept and self-esteem are essential to the success of any organization. Schutz's "Human Element" seminar, now in multiple offerings worldwide, is summarized here, but using and applying his methods will likely require a long-term commitment and professional assistance for many. Still, Schutz is well known for his extensive array of behavior assessment instruments, and this new book now makes his work more accessible. For larger business collections.

From Booklist

Schutz has been heavily influenced by Esalen and Rolf, among other psychological constructs and individual thinkers. Nevertheless, what he provides is a way to apply his "human element" model--characterized by inclusion, control, and openness--to different types of situations in today's workplace. As any psychologist will agree, the drive to realize self-esteem is critical to an individual's life view; therefore, what more appropriate environment to promote the feelings of aliveness, self-awareness, competence, and the like than through business? Schutz expands the popular corporate teamwork concept (see Inside Teams, below) to examine the reasons for success and failure. Schutz's insights into behavior, amply elaborated on through case examples, "pause for reflection" sections, and a variety of quizzes, provide great bases for both individual and organizational building and development. 5.0 out of 5 stars Schutz's Magnum Opus...a phenomenal workplace breakthrough., August 21, 1997

This review is from: The Human Element: Productivity, Self-Esteem, and the Bottom Line (Jossey-Bass Management) (Hardcover)
The best exposition of how to truly succeed in business. Will Schutz strips away the myths of personal dynamism and strategic planning as foundations of leading workers in business today. Schutz, writing with elegance, simplicity and stark clarity builds a compelling case for basing business success on telling the truth, with personal awareness, in every situation. The author mixes the rational, scientific approach to business leadership with a superbly crafted series of right-brained activities such as imagery and drawing on memories. Highly recommended for anyone tired of trying to achieve higher productivity through successive reorganizations and "downsizing."

I found this book completely helpful to know myself better and to know how the relationships work. Although my native tongue is spanish, I find it very easy and friendly to read it in english. I have answered the most of the questions about inclusion, control, openness and now I try to have a better quality of relationship every day. I understand the reactions that come from me and the different groups around me. This book helps me to be a better woman every day. Thanks Will Schutz for this gift!!!

This review is from: The Human Element: Productivity, Self-Esteem, and the Bottom Line (Jossey-Bass Management) (Hardcover)
This book is easy to read and the concepts are key in teams, groups, and one-on-one relationships. Shutz creates many opportunities to apply the concepts to real life and use the information to improve the way in which people relate to one another.
