This review is from: Human Embryology and Developmental Biology Updated Edition: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 3e (Human Embryology & Developmental Biology (Carlson)) (Paperback)
Bought this book because it seemed like it would be the most authoritative source on the bumper-sticker issue of when the embryo's heart begins to beat, being written by a prof. emeritus of bio from the U of Michigan. For what it's worth the answer given in the book is 21-23 days, and "Human Embryology and Developmental Biology" provides not only this, but very interesting, layperson-friendly detail on the development of all the body's systems. No matter what your opinion on when "life" begins, there's a wealth of info in here about the rapid and intricate development of one of the most remarkable systems on this planet, the human body.
