Book Description

Recent years have seen exciting advances in our understanding of the human frontal lobes and their role in diverse cognitive processes, social behaviors, and psychiatric disorders. This volume brings together current research on these important regions of the brain, examining their functions in both health and disease. Significant findings on anatomy, chemistry, and physiology are first presented. Next, chapters address such neuropsychological functions as working memory, attention, inhibition, idea and word generation, and language, tracing their links to the frontal lobes and describing new and established approaches to assessment and testing. Proceeding to clinical manifestations of pathology, contributors examine the impact upon the frontal lobes of tumors, trauma, and various neurological diseases, and explore the role of frontal lobe dysfunction in psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and antisocial behavior.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This impressive tome is dedicated to the memory of D. Frank Benson, a remarkable clinician who focused much of his formidable acumen on deciphering the often cryptic influence of the frontal lobes upon human behavior. Well organized and comprehensive, the book is a worthy continuation of Dr. Benson's lifelong work. It will prove a valuable reference for any clinician interested in human behavior." --Artiss L. Powell, MD, Department of Neurology, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

"This is a significant, and practical, book." --Donald T. Stuss, PhD, Director, Rotman Research Institute; Vice-President Research, Baycrest Center for Geriatric Care; Professor of Psychology, Medicine (Rehabilitation Medicine), University of Toronto, Ontario

5.0 out of 5 stars As much detail as anyone could ask for, November 21, 2003
This review is from: The Human Frontal Lobes: Functions and Disorders (Hardcover)
I first ran across this book a few years ago when doing research for my book, "The PK Zone." I needed something that covered the different functions of the left and right brain, and how they interact. "The Human Frontal Lobes" proved to be a virtual goldmine! This book is an incredible compilation of chapters on a field where not only is there intensive research, but recent findings have greatly changed our understanding of how the brain works. The pages contain a virtual wonderland of everything currently known about how the frontal lobes work, including split brain studies, functional (fMRI) brain scan results, CAT scans, and more. I absolutely loved "The Human Frontal Lobes," found it extremely insightful, and am delighted to have it in my library. If you want facts and details it simply cannot be beat.

I would add one caveat. The terminology in this book is very complex as befits a medical textbook. Anyone who doesn't have a background in medicine or physiology may have real trouble understanding the material, even with a scientific/medical dictionary. It is not for the casual reader. Also, this version is several years old. Because of the cutting edge research continuing in this field, one hopes that it will be updated soon. As it is, I am greatly looking forward to any and all future editions.
