A textbook you can use,
By Lynn (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Genetics (Paperback)
For professors who are thinking of using this book, as a student I felt it engaged me immensely. For students who are contemplating shelling out the $$ for the book, I don't quite know what to tell you. The book is very easy to read, lots of colorful pictures, not just dry text. Each chapter starts off with a semi-personal story about the topic at hand. My teacher didn't use it that often for work but I found it helpful to support what I was learning in class. Great reference. Human Genetics is a very interesting topic and can get any lay person to talk about their views on what kind of world they want to see.

The writing and organization is crap.,

This review is from: Human Genetics (Paperback)
There are some positive aspects of this book:
-Short sections -Lots of pictures/diagrams -Lots of personal stores, examples, etc. All these factors make this book pretty easy to get through. However, the quality of writing and thought organization is terrible: -Jumps from idea to idea -Gives examples of a disorder, but doesn't mention what that disorder is -LOTS of sentence structure issues, including sentences that just don't make sense; Ex: "The second major type of DNA microarray experiment, a DNA sequence variation analysis, screen mutations, SNPs, and the wild type sequence for a particular gene." (This is not a sentence! Is there a word missing or something?) -Wordiness galore: "In a Darwinian sense, an unattractive and out-of-shape parent of ten is more "fit" than a gorgeous triathlete with one child." (What does being unattractive or gorgeous have to do with it?) There are a million more examples of the crappy writing. Honestly, a lot of the sentences are worded awkwardly. This book should be rewritten, reorganized, and EDITED.

Decent..........,

This is a good book, but the topic is so enormous that the book is too broad and should be more specific. The book is an overview of so many areas and it doesn't go into much detail. A excellent book for someone who is illiterate in human genetics like an undergraduate.

Compreshensive text of beginning genetics for healthcare professionals. Thought I was ordering the latest edition but this is adequate for my class.

The front of the book looks different but all other aspects, including the questions are the same. Despite the book being an "international" version and having something on the front that says it is not to be sold in the US, a comparison of this book with the US version shows that they are exactly the same. The only difference is that this book was far less expensive than any of the "US" versions I could find. I recommend ordering this version because you get the same book for far less money.

cut and dry,

This review is from: Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications (Paperback)
This book, to me, is very cut and dry with its information. I've noticed that really important topics I've had to learn (and in DETAIL) for my genetics class, like DNA replication, begin and end their explanation in a fraction of a page...
Like any other textbook, I think it has information one needs to eventually familiarize themselves with for a class, but I'm not too fond of the format. It seems like the professor's had to jump back and forth through the chapters quite a bit to facilitate understanding fundamental and applied concepts...

He sent me the wrong book. A label on the book indicated on the front cover that it was international and NOT for sale in North America. It obviously had a different picture on the cover so the seller must have known it was wrong. I have sent it back and now waiting for the refund.
