the sole reason I got a 5 on my AP Human Geography test,
By Ima Bukwerm (Berkeley, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Geography: People, Place, and Culture (Hardcover)
This book is insightful, detailed, and interesting. I actually didn't fall asleep reading it- now if only that were true for my history textbooks! This was my textbook for an AP Human Geography class I took at my school. The teacher was barely adequate, and I basically taught myself everything from this book. H.J. de Blij knows how to write well. He doesn't just give you facts, either. You're taught how to spacially analyze worldwide phenomena, not just to memorize place names. He covers everything from political geography to urban landscapes to environmental science.
This textbook is also great if you simply want to know more about the world we live in, and wish to learn from a more international, rather than American-centric, point of view.

A Very Good Book for understanding Human Geography,
By
This review is from: Human Geography: People, Place, and Culture (Hardcover)
As someone who holds Masters degrees in both History and Social Studies Education and actually TEACHES AP Human Geography to high school freshmen, I can safely say that DeBlij and co. have come up with a winner in the new edition. I'll admit the 7th edition was filled with misrepresentations, but the new version is such an improvement, that I have discarded the often inaccurate Rubinstein book for this one.
For those who suggest buying "Geography for Dummies" be my guest. I'll just let the title speak for itself. If you look at AP Central- the home of the College Board tests, the AP Human Geography test contains about 9-10% on the basic fundamentals of geography including physical geography. DeBlij covers more than its adequate share of the subject- outside of the instructor teaching the course. Great for AP

Makes me wish I majored in human geography,
This review is from: Human Geography: People, Place, and Culture (Hardcover)
Don't think textbook, think "National Geographic" meets "Travel and Leisure". The authors' choice of photographs brings alive the people, places and cultures of the world in this well written book. Detailed maps, insightful text and rich photographs make this book an informative and enjoyable read.

One of my favorite textbooks,

I used this text in my Cultural Geography course last semester. I'm not usually one to read my textbooks, but this one was really interesting, reader friendly, and filled with lots of current examples (there's even photos of Lindsay Lohan and Tony Hawk). I'm not selling this one back (and for a starving college student--that's really saying something!)

This is an interesting book to read, and has a lot of great content. The book also has a ton of editing errors including spelling errors, incomplete sentences, and just a lot of editing mistakes. Otherwise a great purchase

An interesting textbook! What!?,

This review is from: Human Geography: People, Place, and Culture (Hardcover)
As a college student I always dreaded reading assignments, especially when the required reading came from textbooks. The goal for most texts seems simply to be to put the reader to sleep. This text, much to my surprise and delight, was the exact opposite of what I am used to reading! The content is well-written and easy to understand. The authors cover key geographical concepts and relate them to today's world. They relate this information in a way that is actually exciting for the reader. A great textbook and definitely recommended for students who have trouble understanding geographical concepts.

I really like this book, it actually holds my interest pretty well, which says a lot for a required textbook. I love the easy reading format and the photos are lovely. I only wish it was available(at the time) in paperback, I could have saved a little money.

I purchased this book from amazon, and I am highly impressed with the quality of this "used" book. It looks like it has never even been opened, there are no marks, or highlights. I will be buying used books from amazon again!

This was on the course materials list for a class I recently took. I must say that it was a good read and actually kept me interested. I had the pleasure of being lectured by one of the authors and he was very knowledgeable. Unfortunately a new edition will probably come out in the next few months, making this one obsolete.
