Human evolution is one of the most contentious areas of science. Genetics is beginning to offer powerful insights into our past, but the results continue to be controversial. This stimulating and challenging book of essays, written for a broad audience, looks at the links between genes, language, and the archeological record and evaluates the potential of genetics for uncovering our history.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to Bryan Sykes usual standards, October 20, 2011

This review is from: The Human Inheritance: Genes, Languages, and Evolution (Hardcover)
The Human Inheritance is a collection of papers presented at Wolfson College in the spring of 1997. The authors of these papers are certifiably gifted and on the cutting edge of the fascinating study of genetics. BUT this is NOT a worthwhile read for the average layperson. I've read (and loved) all of Bryan Sykes' books. He's a GREAT writer and teacher. His other works are clear, wildly interesting and absolutely for the novice...like me. This book was a huge disappointment. He didn't write but one of the chapters and the rest of the works had references to details and concepts they didn't explain (and wouldn't have to, to the audience they were addressing at the conference) making it a frustrating read that did nothing to help me understand "The Human Inheritance." I gave it two stars because it probably would be fine for someone with a genetics background. For everyone else, read Sykes' other books.

Really great reading, like a police novel. I read it in a very short time. Mr. Sykes' style is easy enough for amateurs, full of the desire to share his own passion, just great! I can only recommend it.
