5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired and Inspiring March 8, 2011
Format:Hardcover
For over a decade I've been intensely interested in human space flight. And have I struggled to research the subject.

Here in one book is everything you could want to know. I recommend it especially to writers of science fiction such as myself, as an invaluable reference book.

You'll learn about interplanetary trajectories, the transfer windows, logistics, the design of the spacecraft, the lander, and the Mars surface habitat, space medicine, psychological considerations, and naturally philosophical discussions too on why Humanity needs to go to Mars at all.

Practically every contributor is a Ph.D, as are the editors. All articles have been peer-reviewed and on top of that the contributor has to pay to have the article published. It's quality science.

It's inevitable that some of the book is guesswork, because the technology hasn't been invented yet, but trust me it's very well informed guesswork!

2.0 out of 5 stars A scientific journal, not a book April 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Imagine a hardbound book with a fancy cover and the following description:

"A team of over 70 top scientists [..] have prepared a detailed, step-by-step, 'how to' series of over 50 chapters with each logically leading to the next, explaining how a 'Human Mission to Mars' can be successfully accomplished and paid for [..]".

In the "related-section" You see popular-scientific books like Robert Zubrin's "The Case for Mars". So, what do You expect? Personally, i imagined the book to be like "The Case for Mars", but more scientific, more interdisciplinary, more detailed. I was so wrong.

"Human Mission To Mars" is the print edition of a scientific journal, a loose collection of papers - Some authors present new ideas, others just write up their recent projects. There is only weak structuring - the papers are grouped by topic, but they certainly do not "each [..] logically lead to the next". All this is fine for a journal, because nobody ever reads journals (with rare exceptions). You search for a specific paper or topic on Google Scholar or whatever, find a paper and read it. Usually You don't order the printed "74th Proceedings of XYZ" and read them from cover to cover.

So here is my advice: Go to the publisher's website, where all of the papers are available for free, and read only those that catch Your eye. Don't buy the book unless You are sure You need the print edition (which is black and white, by the way).

PS: I wrote the above review after i realized that "Human Mission To Mars" is a journal and is available for free online. In my original review (below) i assumed that this was intended to be a book in the conventional sense. Consequently, my opinion was much more negative:

----------------------------------------------
"1000 pages of paper and 100 pages of content"

This book contains a collection of 55 papers by different authors. The average quality of the contributions is very poor. It does not appear to me, that the editors attempted to screen out works that are redundant or in want of originality.

The articles cover all imaginable topics - the benefits of a human mars mission, the hazards of weightlessness, a proposal to use lava tubes for shelter, etc. However, this implied breadth (and at 1000 pages, also depth) is misleading - apart from the ubiquitous repetitions, most articles are very superficial. Given the limited space (about 10 pages if you count out the abstracts, introductions and references), most authors dedicate half of it to minutiae from their own work and the other half to the spectacular conclusion, that future studies will be needed to address the many unanswered questions.

If You look, say, for a compact introduction to the space radiation problem, and a quantitative discussion of shielding options, look somewhere else. Also, do not expect to find a crisp discussion of aerocapture technology. But look no further, if You seek a confused book, musing for the fifth time in a row over the possibility of finding life "up there".

The usefulness of this edition is further diminished by its being black and white, which is rather annoying, since many authors refer to color-coded features in their graphics. You are constantly left to guess which of the two grey lines is "red" and which one "blue".

I expected a scientific and rigorous work, but found a heap of extended abstracts, completely devoid of formulae or a sense for the important. I must admit however, that a handful of articles were insightful. It is only for these, that i award this book 2 stars out of 5.

This book is edited by NASA Senior Scientist Science Directorate Dr. Joel Levine. Over 70 of the top scientists in the world including 20 top NASA scientists, 4 astronauts two of whom walked on the moon, contributed to this text which is a veritable road map to the Red Planet and explains how we can put humans on Mars and establish a colony on the Red Planet by the end of the coming decade--which is exactly what Obama and NASA's leadership are against. NASA is against a human mission to Mars. NASA's failed leadership and Obama are turning our human space program into an expensive toy for billionaires who want to take a ride or a vacation in space. NASA's leadership has destroyed our human space program, and they were outraged when this book was published and then tried to sabotage it. NASA leadership blocked press releases, attacked top scientists for proposing a human mission to Mars, and then attacked and slandered the journal which first published these articles. NASA is against any meaningful space exploration by humans. NASA favors privatization and giving away our space program to billionaires who can use it as a toy. NASA is opposed a human mission to Mars, or even exploring for life on Mars. This is the book which explains how it can be done, and even paid for, with the American tax payer getting a free ride and all the benefits. This is THE BOOK NASA Administrators and Obama DO NOT WANT YOU TO READ.
