Great musicians. Witty lyrics. Whatever happened to them?,

I discovered these guys back in 1992 in my sister's junk pile of tapes, among other unknown artists, back when she worked for a music/video distribution company. 'Me & Elvis' is the first track, which caught my attention right off the bat. In following with the whole 'Elvis-faked-his-death' thing, this song talks of how they hung out together up to the time when Elvis supposedly fakes his death. 'Hole In My Head' is a nice song about how typically childish men can be in relationships. But my favorite song is 'These Are The Days' with it's upbeat, if rather cynical, view of life. All in all, it's worth owning because these guys are great musicians who, as you'll find out if you listen to the CD, have diverse musical influences. By the way, I found the CD version years later at a flea market and bought it right away.

Overtly Human Radio,
By Russ Ebersole (Escondido, CA. USA) - See all my reviews

When I first heard this CD 10 years or so ago I immediately recorded it on Cassette for Auto listening. For a pop music band they were the most inventive and progressive band I heard at the time. Almost every song is an absolute gem. I always got excited telling all my close friends about it with words that fell on deaf ears. Finally a local record store found a copy (LP) which was in mint condition, he remembered my request after 8 years. I tried to find it previously on line with no results or near misses. I now have it on two formats, and now that I found this site I will be getting a copy for my CD player. This is a must have. Written almost in the style of the late Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee, Giraff). I cannot recommend it enough. The other reviews will tell you about the individual songs, but until you actually hear it, you've been deprived!

If only we could have had more from this band!,

Most of the high points have already been covered. However, I was very surprised no one mentioned the track "My First Million". While I love "Me & Elvis" and others, "My First Million" is, and will always be, my favorite track. I first heard this album back in 1990 or 1991 when a friend's big brother brought it home with him from college. I was blown away. We lost his copy a couple of years later and were devastated. Then in about '98 I was browsing my local used cd store and found TWO copies traded in! One copy was stolen with my cd wallet (I hope the crook enjoyed that cd), but I still have the other. As I write this I'm ripping and encoding it to 320 br mp3 so it can be safely archived for many more years of listening pleasure.
As far as I know this was the only album they ever released. It's such a shame that it didn't catch on commercially. I can only imagine what they could have turned out as they progressed as a band.

a lost treasure,

I was working at a small market radio station in Central Kansas when this came out. We jumped all over Me and Elvis and also played Hole in my Head occasionally. Much to my disappointment the label didn't stay behind Human Radio and that was it. I consider this record to be one of the 2 best albums recorded in the late 80's/early 90s. THe other being Toy Matinee.
Checking out the mypsace page for the band i heard some of songs that were set for the 2nd record and they are brilliant. So, I can only hope that Wounded Bird, or one of the other oddity labels will pick this up and release it again. A shame to have lost this band. Bloody Brilliant Ian

My very favorite Live Band!,

A fantastic rock band that almost made the bigtime in the 90s, nonetheless revered by those that were lucky enough to watch and listen to them play. Impeccable. Ross Rice, Steve Eby, Peter Hyrka, Steve Arnold and Kye Kennedy have rare talent and this is a case where studying music at college (Berkley, in at least one case) just put the icing on the cake. These guys are gods. Check em out at their various other projects.
I highly recommend this album.

I got to see these guys a number of times in Memphis in the late '80s-early '90s and the recordings here don't come close to capturing what it felt like watch them on stage clearly having a blast. And as goober as this sounds, seeing them do a song called "While You Were Sleeping" ('they started up another war/i guess the generals got bored/while you sleeee-ping) at the Overton Park Shell is one of my most cherished musical memories ... a warm summer evening, a four-beer buzz, my six best friends and this group.
Yeah, they had me & elvis, as a hit. But it's like saying Crowded House had that "Hey Now Hey Now" song. It leaves a huge amount of really good, well-constructed pop music on the table.

I remember toga parties in the "Big White House" in Memphis. Human Radio. The band was like a HUMAN RADIO. Name a tune, chances are that they could either play it or fake it. This band should have been big but, alas, it didn't happen. Avalanches never fall in the direction that you choose. You can find Ross Rice on MySpace. I'm proud to have been a friend of his back in the days of Garibaldi's and Green Leaves. Me and Elvis used to have a good time......... Elvis and I. M. Penix

Great intelligent pop music,

The term "pop music" has gotten bad press over the years, but a finely crafted pop song is nothing to sneeze at. Such songs stay in our memories and invite us -- nay, compel us -- to sing along with them. Human Radio made several great pop songs, which deserved a far larger audience than they ever got.
Like someone else who reviewed this album, I too first heard them on a demo tape sent to a radio station where I happened to be working at the time. And I also tried to find a copy of their album for several years. I had almost given up looking when I stumbled upon this CD a couple years ago at a used record store. What a gem. I'll admit that I don't listen to all the cuts equally, but there are more hits than misses here, and of course "Me and Elvis" is the standout. Also love "My First Million" and "Hole in My Head". Thanks to bassist Steve Arnold for popping up here -- I'd assumed that the band broke up, but often wondered what happened to each of the guys in the group. Kept thinking I'd see them again somewhere. So interesting that somebody else mentioned Toy Matinee (you can buy their album here on Amazon), as I had made the same comparison, and they are another of those bands that put out one really good "pop music" album, then disappeared too soon. If you see a copy of this album for sale somewhere, buy it! |
