One of the most useful textbooks ....,
By Nelson Chan (Tampa, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resource Management (Hardcover)
I used this textbook for my MBA Human Resource Management course in the spring of 2001. I found the textbook quite up to date with great case studies and end of chapter exercises. They were quite relavent to current issues and the ongoing AOL-Time Warner case was an used throughout the book.

HRM - review by a student,
By Heather Gibson (Grantham Lincs, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resource Management (Hardcover)
The textbook is wonderful for individuals interested in learning about human resource management. Each chapter is carefully constructed with the topics hightlighted. The important vocabulary words are located in the outside margins with their appropriate definitions, which is helpful. The book also consists of numerous relevent "figures" or graphs that aid in demonstrating important ideas. I cannot comment on the order of the chapters or the order of the material and how it fits together, simply because I do not know enough about HRM to determine an appropriate order. However, the text was well organized and did a great job providing information about HRM discipline. It gave up-to-date examples and I could always understand the chapters, compared to some texts that are difficult to read and comprehend. In addition, there was an employment guide computer disc located on the book cover. I was not required to use the CD for class purposes, therefore I do not know if it is beneficial or not. But it is an additional tool for learning about human resource management. Overall, the book was excellent and I have no complaints.

Great book for an intro to Human Resource Management,
By Stacy Blavat (Green Bay, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resource Management (Hardcover)
Human Resource Management was a well-written book that was easy to read. It is a great book for someone wishing to learn more about the functions of Human Resources professionals. After reading this book, I have confirmed my major in Human Resources. There are three aspects of this book that I particularily liked, apart from it being easy to read. Frist, it is clear to the reader what is expected to be learned because the objectives are stated at the beginning of each chapter. Second, the book relates the concepts to real-life situations in the HR perspective sections. This makes it easier to grasp "textbook" definitions. Third, the authors make good use of figures and graphs to further reiterate the concepts. This is especially helpful for visual learners, like myself. In all, I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn more about Human Resource Management.

Excellent book for learning Human Resource Management,
By Nathan Rust (Harlaxton, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resource Management (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book if your are interested in learning all about Human Resource Management. It's very easy to read and follow. It's well-organized and well-written, chapter after chapter. The main points are clearly emphasized, with key definitions on each page. There are several things I liked specifically about this book. First, there was an incredible amount of real life examples throughout the book. Specifically, I appreciated the "HR Transition" section at the beginning of each chapter. The sections helped me understand the material effectively by giving specific business world examples on the topic of dicussion. Second, I appreciated the abundance of the figures, diagrams, charts, and images throughout the book. Often books are well-written, but lack in figures and images. This book, however, succeeds easily in providing adequate amount of visuals. Such figures and images make learning the concepts of the book so much easier. Finally, I appreciated the "Chapter Summary" section. It recapped the main points of the chapter, and helped me understand what information was most important in the chapter. There really isn't a whole lot that I disliked about the book. At times, I felt that some less important points were over-emphasized, and that some of the diagrams were confusing. With any respect, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in Human Resource Management.

Objective Learning,
By Danna DeVilbiss (grantham, england) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resource Management (Hardcover)
I believed the text book to be a great tool in the education of Human Resource Management. The book was very objective in teaching the aspects and procedures of Human Resource Management. The text would give both sides to the story. In almost all areas, the book gave disadvantages and advantages to using the policies presented. The text also did a good job of relating the material with current events. The text provided stories and inserts that related to issues with current companies. Therefore the reader is allowed to see how the material is actually applied in the real world.

Human Resource Management,
By Kim Zaloudek (Grantham, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resource Management (Hardcover)
This book had some strong points and some weak points. Some of the things that I enjoyed about this book were the chapter summaries. I think that the author did a great job summarizing the main points at the end, in a way that was easy to understand. It helped me a lot to read the summaries, and then read the chapter. To review, I reread the chapter summaries and was able to learn and retain the information. I also think that the definitions were well written and to the point. I liked the way the author included a list of definitions at the end of the chapter along with the page on which they appeared. The diagrams helped a lot to relay the information the author was trying to teach. Finally, at the end of the book, the author included some wonderful appendixes. I especially liked appendix B and D. Appendix B talks about some of the most important organizations in HR. This is very helpful to look at. Appendix D deals with starting a career. This is most helpful for me because I am still a student. It talks about everything from searching for jobs and compiling a resume, to how to interview and select job offers. This is information that college students really need, but that is often times, overlooked. Some of the parts that could be improved are the importance of technology on human resources. I think that it looked a lot at how human resources has been in the past, and how it is today, but not enough about what it will be like in the future. However, overall, I think this was a good book, especially for an introductory level human resource course. I would recommend it!

Human Resource Management - Book Review,
By Stephanie Stock (Grantham England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resource Management (Hardcover)
The HRM book that we used for class is easy to follow and to understand. The text was written to make it easy for the reader to understand and follow along, getting a good foundation to the principles and functions of HRM. It gave a clear basis on the job functions, and the figures and tables were clear, concise, and detrimental to the understanding of the material. Without the figures, it would have been hard to grasp the entire concept of the chapter. The order of the chapters seemed to flow in an organized fashion, grouping the similiar chapters together in units, although this being my first HRM course, I find it hard to rate the order of importance of the chapters. Overall I would recommend this book to other HRM professors. I thought that the book gave a lot of useful information and with the figures and tables the information was easy to understand and to apply to the real processes of HRM. With the examples and illustrations, this book would be very useful to all those taking a Human Resource Management course.

Mathis and Jackson do a good job of covering the important points of HR Management. The book was well organized and easy to follow. The figures and charts are very useful and aide in understanding the subject matter. The chapter objectives listed in the beginning of the chapter and the chapter summaries at the end are also very helpful. I would recomend this text for use in other HRM classes.

Human Resource Management Review,
By Amy Howard (Harlaxton College in England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resource Management (Hardcover)
The Human Resource Management text was very helpful in putting visual statistics to what we were learning at the time. The figures in the text were both relevant and helpful. Although the text was very repititive, it helped me to learn the material. The text provided good examples of each topic discussed and addressed both sides of any controversial issues that were reviewed. It also was easy to understand and follow.

I found this book to be a great textbook in class. It is easy to read, and is full of clear examples. The graphs and illustrations helped me visualize the information, which was very helpful during studying and test taking. The book is very well organized. Main terms and concepts are highlighted in bold, which helped me zero in on important information. Not only was this text helpful in class, but it also served as a very useful resource. I used many statistics, website addresses, and illustrations for research in areas outside of class. Most importantly, this book gave me valuable insight into the human resource arena which has guided me in my business career.
