Book Description

January 8, 2011
This Guide is about social media risks and the employment lifecycle. While plenty of guidance exists relative to social media marketing, strategic planning, business development and other related topics, very little has been done to address social media-related risks and human resources. As this Guide will demonstrate, social media risks relative to human resources activities are growing. This Guide will assist human resources professionals in identifying and mitigating social media-related risks before they manifest into damaging events that can take a toll on an organization’s reputation and profitability. A common historical response to social media has been to deny its existence within the organizational walls. As this Guide will show, it is no longer possible for organizations to bury their heads in the sand and ignore social media’s presence. Social media is not only here, it’s there, and there, and everywhere. Organizations no longer have the luxury of escaping social media’s influence in the workplace. In fact, the risks posed by social media are greatest within organizations that fail to acknowledge its existence. The goal of this Guide is to make the case that all organizations, regardless of their involvement in social media activities, are subject to social media risks in the workplace. As such, a desired outcome of this Guide is to assist organizations in implementing social media guidance related to human resources management. This guidance, in the form of policies and procedures, will protect organizations against the risks posed by social media, and in some cases, will provide organizations with the confidence to accept social media as a strategic objective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful & Straightforward Guide to Help Reduce Organizational Social Media Related Risk, February 21, 2011
By
J. Juan Macias (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks (Paperback)
Delivering its message effectively to Human Resources (HR) & non-HR professionals alike, this well-written Guide is packed full of practical tools to help organizations manage their social media related risk exposure. Examples of tools provided include a social media primer, relevant case law examples, & a useful "Action Items" task list covering risk management components of recruitment through social media, employee use of social media and social media-based terminations. Worth the price of the guide alone, this task list provides a handy & easy to follow "road map" to help organizations get started right away on devising/improving their social media risk management plan of action.

The Guide highlights the importance of organizations (big & small) recognizing and managing their exposure to organizational social media risks. I felt empowered as Jesse Torres demystified this seldom discussed topic, codified it in a simplistic manner & presented practical guidance to help develop risk management strategies (i.e., create a formal, written social media policy & training program for employees). I have heard many presentations/ webinars around social media strategy development (i.e., marketing, building brand awareness) but none have tackled the subject of social medical risk management in the comprehensive yet direct manner presented in this Guide.

In short, this Guide provides powerful, user-friendly guidance on what known/unknown social media risks might be lurking inside/outside of our organizations and how we might mitigate them by proactively incorporating targeted social media policies & procedures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relevant Guide Book With Solutions That Impact, February 15, 2011
This review is from: Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks (Paperback)
How do organizations tackle the massive influence of social media in the work place?

That's where this easy to read, comprehensive guide book "HUMAN RESOURCES GUIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA RISKS" arrives just in time, yielding real world examples and solutions for organizations to utilize the benefits and mitigate risks in Social media. This book got me thinking about the social media revolution and its impact on business in a new way. Having read many books on social media, I haven't come across a book like this one. Starting with a wide-ranging overview of the social media revolution, author and banker Jesse Torres skillfully takes the reader through 3 key areas; recruitment, workers use of social media, and social media based terminations. He then provides an action plan, which serves as a template for organizations to utilize the value of social media in the work place and at the same time offset social media risk.

This GO TO GUIDE BOOK makes it easy to grasp the complexity of social media's impact in organizations and one you will go back to time and again to apply the suggested action plan and solutions. A greatly needed book in the digital revolution. I highly recommend it. 5 stars!
