Powerful & Straightforward Guide to Help Reduce Organizational Social Media Related Risk,
By J. Juan Macias (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks (Paperback)
Delivering its message effectively to Human Resources (HR) & non-HR professionals alike, this well-written Guide is packed full of practical tools to help organizations manage their social media related risk exposure. Examples of tools provided include a social media primer, relevant case law examples, & a useful "Action Items" task list covering risk management components of recruitment through social media, employee use of social media and social media-based terminations. Worth the price of the guide alone, this task list provides a handy & easy to follow "road map" to help organizations get started right away on devising/improving their social media risk management plan of action. The Guide highlights the importance of organizations (big & small) recognizing and managing their exposure to organizational social media risks. I felt empowered as Jesse Torres demystified this seldom discussed topic, codified it in a simplistic manner & presented practical guidance to help develop risk management strategies (i.e., create a formal, written social media policy & training program for employees). I have heard many presentations/ webinars around social media strategy development (i.e., marketing, building brand awareness) but none have tackled the subject of social medical risk management in the comprehensive yet direct manner presented in this Guide. In short, this Guide provides powerful, user-friendly guidance on what known/unknown social media risks might be lurking inside/outside of our organizations and how we might mitigate them by proactively incorporating targeted social media policies & procedures.

Relevant Guide Book With Solutions That Impact,
This review is from: Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks (Paperback)
How do organizations tackle the massive influence of social media in the work place? That's where this easy to read, comprehensive guide book "HUMAN RESOURCES GUIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA RISKS" arrives just in time, yielding real world examples and solutions for organizations to utilize the benefits and mitigate risks in Social media. This book got me thinking about the social media revolution and its impact on business in a new way. Having read many books on social media, I haven't come across a book like this one. Starting with a wide-ranging overview of the social media revolution, author and banker Jesse Torres skillfully takes the reader through 3 key areas; recruitment, workers use of social media, and social media based terminations. He then provides an action plan, which serves as a template for organizations to utilize the value of social media in the work place and at the same time offset social media risk. This GO TO GUIDE BOOK makes it easy to grasp the complexity of social media's impact in organizations and one you will go back to time and again to apply the suggested action plan and solutions. A greatly needed book in the digital revolution. I highly recommend it. 5 stars!

Smart. Quick. Essential.,
This review is from: Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks (Paperback)
If you're in business, almost any kind of business, your company is floating along in the rapidly accelerating currents of social media. And coming up there could be a major waterfall. As the author points out with many vivid case study examples, there are some significant opportunities here - and hazards. You might start reading this simple-looking yellow guide casually but after the first few pages you'll be scrambling to get a pen to take notes, a lot of notes. My own memo to myself - wow, am I glad I read this today, only wish I read it sooner.

Good, quick guide on a timely topic,
This review is from: Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks (Paperback)
This 46-page book is a good, quick guide on one of the most timely topics facing organizations today--the impact of social media and how it can both be used as a positive branding/marketing tool while mitigating the risks that can arise from employee/organization use of social media both on a professional and personal basis. I was particularly interested in this topic because I teach a course on ethics in my professional field (philanthropy/grantmaking). Over the past two years, my co-presenter and I have included an ethical scenario that raises questions over the use of social media information for both evaluating grant applications as well as for human resources purposes. In his book, Jesse Torres presents some very recent case law that addresses some of the legal ramifications on the use of social media by employees. While he doesn't advocate whether an organizaton ought to use social media as a tool, he does explore the questions and risks that may arise and how these risks can be proactively mitigated by establishing a social media policy. While he does not give boilerplate language for such a policy, he is correct in positing that it is an issue that needs to be discussed at the leadership levels of an organization. And, if an institutional policy is adopted, recommends that thought and time be devoted to adequate employee training and follow-up to ensure that the policy is clearly understood and that there is a system in place to address questions that may arise within the organization. It's a very quick read (I finished it within two hours, but then again, I'm a pretty fast reader). I recommend a read and sharing it with your colleagues as well. It was helpful for me not only in thinking how I can incorporate new scenarios into the ethics course that I teach, but also how I use social media on a personal and professional basis. I am passing along my copy to our human resources director and leadership team at work so that my employer will hopefully consider developing and adopting a social media policy. Jesse Torres is a the CEO of a multi-million dollar community bank, and very active in various social media networks. I applaud him for taking the time to share his knowledge and experiences through this book as I'm sure there will be numerous other books that will be published over the next year or two on this most timely topic. His "Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks" is a fantastic starting point.

Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks,
This review is from: Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks (Paperback)
Five years ago, very few knew what the term social media meant. Fast forward to today, and just about everyone that knows how to use a computer is either on Facebook, Twitter or blogging in cyberspace. This new reality has presented opportunities to the business world, but also has presented new frontiers of challenges within the business workplace.Author Jesse Torres does an excellent job creating this easy-to-read and quick reference guide to help explore and expose potential opportunities, challenges, liabilities and threats that a proactive business owner or human resource personnel should be ahead of and ready to tackle. Torres clearly states that social media within the workplace is such a new platform, that many practices and "rules" have still not clearly been defined and continuing to evolve. This book does not give you the answers, but it does make you think about the questions. Social media in the workplace is the "wild west" and this guide helps give the reader the horses and tools to successfully conquer this new frontier.

This review is from: Human Resources Guide to Social Media Risks (Paperback)
Human Resources Guide to Social Media RisksNo organization is immune from social media risks - regardless of its social media strategy. This book is about social media risks and the employment lifecycle. While plenty of guidance exists relative to social media marketing, strategic planning, business development and other related topics, very little has been done to address social media-related risks and human resources. This book assists human resources professionals in identifying and mitigating social media-related risks before they manifest into damaging events that can take a toll on an organiziaton's reputation and profitability. This book is intended to get the reader up and running quickly. It is a concise guide and includes recommendations for adequately managing risks. Jesse Torres |
