Editorial Reviews

Review

'Keeping one up-to-date with the ageless theme of sexuality along with the bio-psycho-socio-techno changes and challenges in the field of human sexuality is no easy task. However, this text is up to the task... Human Sexuality, now in the fourth edition, remains an excellent college and introductory graduate textbook on the topic of human sexuality. --Sigmund Hough, Sexuality and Disability Journal

About the Author

SIMON LEVAY, Ph.D. British-born neuroscientist turned science writer and teacher. He was educated at Cambridge University, UK,and the University of Gottingen, Germany. In 1971, he moved to the United States. He has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and has taught at Harvard, the University of California, and Stanford University, all USA. LeVay has authored over 40 scientific studies; the best known of these is a 1991 report in Science that described a difference in brain structure between heterosexual and homosexual men. This study helped spark a wealth of new research on the biology of sexual orientation. LeVay is the author or coauthor of nine books, some in the area of human sexuality and others on a broader range of scientific topics. JANICE BALDWIN, Ph.D. Sociologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. She is co-author, with her husband John Baldwin, of numerous studies and articles in the area of sexuality and sex education, as well as the textbook Behavior Principles in Everyday Life, now in its fourth edition. The Baldwins co-teach an undergraduate Human Sexuality course that is regularly voted Best Course at UCSB. They also teach an advanced seminar course on the same topic. The Baldwins have been named as Best Professors on several occasions.

More About the Author

Simon LeVay is a British-born neuroscientist turned writer. He is best known for a 1991 study, published in Science, which reported on a difference in brain structure between gay and straight men. He has served on the faculties of Harvard Medical School and the Salk Institute in San Diego, but he now lives in Los Angeles. Among his 12 published books are several on sex, including a college textbook titled Human Sexuality (now in its fourth edition), and Gay, Straight, and the Reason Why: The Science of Sexual Orientation. His most recent book is a historical novel, The Donation of Constantine. Once a fanatical bicycle racer, LeVay continues to ride his bicycle, though at a more sober pace. He is intolerant of creationists, lactose, and staying indoors.

LeVay writes: "In the early 1960s, as a teenager, I was arrested and jailed briefly, along with the renowned 90-year-old philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell. (The occasion was an anti-war demonstration.) This lead to my reading Russell's History of Western Philosophy. Only one paragraph in that long book stuck in my memory: it dealt with the mysterious 8th-century forgery known as the Donation of Constantine. Intrigue, papal politics, winter journeys, bloody battles -- maybe even a hint of bodice-ripping! What a great topic for a novel, I thought. Fifty years later, I wrote it."

This text book offers a scientific and open perspective on a variety of sexual topics. After reading it, I notice the subtle differences in people and also feel like I accept people for those differences. This book is well written and interesting with a great graphical layout. I recommend buying the book either for a course on sexuality, or to read for fun as you open your horizons. You will be a more knowledgeable and accepting person when you have finished it.

I read this book from page to page, I have a real interest in human sexuality, abnormal sexualities, and so on.

I enjoy reading it, I think you really have to be a fan of the subject and interest in it to be able to read it from one page to the end.

It covered a lot of great topics that you would expect, starting with the basics to advances - cell mutations, cell parts, sexual disorders, sexual organ disorders etc..

Love the loose-leaf version. Gives flexibility in navigating the pages. Helpful to use when taking an openbook test. Content a bit heavy on the technical side in some areas. Used the website also. Good resource.

This is a great book. My only advice is that it should not be purchased in the looseleaf edition. This is a very valuable text which takes a very progressive approach to the study of sexuality.
