Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Check your disbelief at the door and prepare to thoroughly enjoy Human Target, a Fox TV series combining drama, humor, and action--lots of action--and debuting on DVD with all 12 first-season episodes (plus bonus material) on three discs. At center stage in this DC Comics adaptation is Christopher Chance (Mark Valley, in a very different role from his familiar turn on Boston Legal), an erstwhile assassin who turned from killing people to protecting them after a life-changing encounter a few years earlier (detailed in a semi-prequel that is the season's last episode). Now, joined by ex-cop Winston (Chi McBride) and wiseacre-genius-jack-of-all-trades Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley), Chance takes on a variety of clients, partly for the money but mostly for the fun ("Will I get to ride on it?" is his response when the designer of California's first bullet train asks for his protection). Whether it's in the service of a fellow who has "the skeleton key to the Internet" (which could spell "the end of information security as we know it" if it falls into the wrong hands), a district attorney with a tracking device planted in her body by the criminal gang that wants to kill her, or even the Princess of Wales (whose affair with a commoner has made her the target of an assassination plot hatched by evil dudes in the palace inner circle), Chance has some serious skills, from speaking fluent Japanese and citing obscure legal precedents to passing as a professional boxer and flying a 747--upside down. The stories are preposterous and the presentation lighthearted and amusing (watching the Princess, disguised as a hooker, throwing back shots in a bar and using her fencing skills to fight off the bad guys is a hoot), but what really distinguishes Human Target are the action and fight set pieces in every episode. These are pulled off mostly with stunts instead of computer tricks, and the results are as good as or better than anything on television and almost in the same league as, say, those in a Bourne film--no small feat when you take into account the lower budgets and tight shooting schedules common to TV productions. --Sam Graham

Product Description

This is the thinking of Christopher Chance, a mysterious security agent for hire who assumes different identities, at times literally becoming a human target on behalf of his clients. Using the popular DC Comics title as a springboard for riveting and intelligent action and adventure, Human Target provides a thrill ride with no clear boundaries. Resourceful, driven and compelled by a force known only to him, this take-charge antihero will barter his services for an aged bottle of scotch, much to the chagrin of his shadowy associates. If someone is threatened or a life is in danger...leave it to Chance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Human Target: The Complete First Season June 11, 2010
Format:DVD
Fox took a chance on a live action series based on a comic book. It worked beautifully.

The twelve episodes are well crafted and brilliantly acted. The plots are outrageous, but it is different from anything on currently.

Christopher Chance is played by Mark Valley (Boston Legal). Winston, the head of this secret operative group, is brought to life, sizzling life, by Chi McBride (Boston Public). The odd man out, Guerrero, is given such a mysterious allure by Jackie Earle Haley (various film and television roles).

These three form a triad which keeps you guessing week from week about their motivations, their past and their apparent commitment to each other. Guerrero seems to be full of surprises.

Beautiful and talented Emmaunelle Vaugier, the fearless FBI Special Agent Emma Barnes, is a perfect match for Mark Valley's Christopher Chance. Let's hope we see more of her in the second season.

From the pilot with a super train to the season finale of twists and turns and flashbacks, you have an excellent series which does not take itself seriously. A number of comparisons have been made to Jack Bauer, but Christopher Chance is not a serious commentary on contemporary society. It is just fun with great stories, plenty of action, daring skills, and a full slate of guest stars.

Fox has it on Friday nights this Fall. As everyone knows, Friday nights are a terrible time slot. Let's hope Fox gives it a full 22 episode run.

5.0 out of 5 stars a TV show that converted a comic book well !! April 22, 2010
Format:Blu-ray
Chi McBride is great as usal, Jackie Earle Haley EXCELLENT a couple of the middle epsidoes are not as strong as the opening but the season finale, knocks it out of the park and has a great list of "guest stars" inclinding Amy Acker, Armand Asanti, Lennie James and Lee Majors !! I hope Fox gives this one another sseason

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like James Bond, you should like Human Target April 14, 2010
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Human Target is a fantastic show-- part James Bond part 60's style adventure. With tongue most often in cheek, this series goes around the globe with Christoper Chance doing his James Bond style protection of the innocent and the endangered. Shot in HD, the show is visually stunning- can't wait for the Blu-Ray discs.

The show works well for what it offers. Mark Valley is okay in the lead role; the supporting cast helps hold him up better than most ensembles on similar shows. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Best season
It's to bad that Fox messed with the formula of this season. If they hadn't than this would still be a hit.

Season finale cliffhanger ?
It does have a cliffhanger ending, but season 2 is starting up October 1st. As far as I know there is no word about it being canceled, and it looks like this season will have 13 episodes instead of 12.
