Comment: 3 CD set is in near-mint condition. There is a hole in the bar code, but not in the case. All other artwork is complete and intact. CD booklet has been autographed by Bear McCreary "To Roxanne."

If you don't know who Bear McCreary is then I suggest you familiarize yourself with him, because he is quickly becoming sort of a big deal. Most people know him for his work on the newer Battlestar Galactica series, but he has also done the scores for Caprica, Eureka, The Sarah Conner Chronicles and now Human Target. His score to the video game Dark Void is a wonder and should be heard by all. That score alone should turn you into a Bear McCreary fan.

Human Target got an Emmy nomination for "Best Theme", and when you hear track 1 of this album you'll know why. Now, the rest of the score is an absolute treat for listeners. The score is really just pure fun thematic stuff. A lot of the score pays homage to the great action/adventure scores composed by John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein and more. It also pays as an homage to Bernstein in that Bernstein acted as a mentor to Bear in his early days.

La-La Land Records released 3 full discs of season 1's score here and it is quite glorious. The music never lets up and has all of Bear's style. One thing I notice about how McCreary's style works is that he always has an amazing central theme. That theme then becomes the anchor for the whole score. Different variations of that motif will then become the main structure that weaves the music together. That's the reason why I absolutely loved his Dark Void score. It was because the central theme was so grand that it was able to carry the entire score. Actually the theme from Human Target is very similar to Dark Void too. It's so original yet it feels like it was an adventure theme written many years ago.

Now, this score won't tug your heartstrings in anyway so don't expect that, but it does come from the heart.

I suppose the largest criticism anyone has of Bear McCreary's work is that it can be too subtle and thin in the orchestration. While I usually disagree, there is no way people can say that about this particular soundtrack, no matter how biased they are. This 3-disc set marks yet another landmark that Bear has created in the history of television scores, as it boasts the largest orchestra assembled for a TV show to date. And with this tool, Bear once again proved that his versatility knows no bounds. Every week he produced a score that would have given John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, or any of the other greats a run for their money. Soaring string melodies, powerful horn licks, woodwind flourishes, thematic developments...it's all here! If you have been waiting for Bear to create a more traditional score, or have simply been looking for a good Soundtrack lately, this should be your first purchase.

Still think I'm a fanboi? Bear was nominated for his work on the opening titles, which doubles as the Christopher Chance theme (the central leitmotif of the show). And though I disagree with the decision of who won, that says that even the emmys couldn't deny the quality of this score.

It should also be noted that I do, in fact, own this set. I just bought it from La La Land Records rather than Amazon, because that's where they were selling them at the time.

Sure, it's a shame that the show has changed hands, but I honestly find it hard to be bitter now...because we have an amazing ride that is 3 discs long, and I'll doubt I'll get tired of it.

Don't be so quick to jump on some of the high prices from 3rd party sellers on this CD, it's still available linked from Bear's web site at list price.

You may need to come back here when it sells out, but as of 11/20/2010 there are still retail copies at list price available.

This is a great TV soundtrack compiliation. Not only do you get the theme music but lots of incidental music that is a perfect background for doing your daily chores or reading in your favorite chair. Music motifs change enough so that even with three discs it does not get boring in the least. Highly recommended.
