How does the iJoy-100 do this? It's called "Robotic Massage Technology," or RMT -- a sophisticated set of human-like mechanisms, designed and engineered by a team of scientists, researchers, and engineers, who know how important massage is to good health. Based on the treatments used by massage therapists, chiropractors, and physicians, RMT is one of the most advanced robotic massage systems ever devised.

Inside every iJoy-100 are the "hands" of a trained massage therapist. With three 15-minute programs to choose from -- upper back, lower back and entire back -- and four modes of massage to employ -- rolling, kneading, percussion, or compression -- the iJoy offers a full range and of massages to meet your needs. The modes employed by RMT closely replicates the therapeutic techniques used by back and spinal care professionals and is the preferred technology of the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists. These modes are designed to follow the natural contour of your spine, and move three-dimensionally to give your back a complete treatment.

The Four Modes of Massage
From the controls of the chair's conveniently placed wired remote, you can choose your method of massage as well as the mode. The "rolling" mode is designed to give you the feel of a gentle massage by pressing firmly on one side of your spine and then the other. This mode is a tension reducer and works to prepare your back for deeper tissue work. The chair's "kneading" option feels like thumbs pressing firmly in circular motion on both sides of the spine and is a great way to improve your back's circulation. With the "compression" mode -- an RMT exclusive -- the chair gives you the feel of the heel of your therapists hands, firmly pushing on muscles alongside your spine -- movement that's designed to aid in improving your mobility and posture. And with the "percussion" mode, you'll feel fists, or the edge of a pair of strong hands, rapidly tapping on your back muscles. This is a popular therapy in sports medicine, and is used to flex spinal joints and invigorate your entire back. So, regardless of your massage needs, the iJoy-100 is designed to help.

From the Convenience of your Chair
Best of all, the iJoy-100 is designed with both your comfort and convenience in mind. With lush, but firm, cushioning covered with a red brushed polyester/nylon mesh that's a cinch to wash, the iJoy-100 adds an elegant touch to any room. Its many features include a child safety lock, adjustable lumbar support, an easy-to-reach recline lever, and discreetly placed wheels for easy mobility. The wired remote is stored on the side of the chair, within easy reach, and a removable massage softening pad fits snugly behind your head.

In other words, the iJoy-100 is your own "remarkably human" massage therapist that will give your back the therapy that it deserves -- all from the convenience and comfort of your own home.

Bearing problem February 7, 2010
I purchased this chair 4 years ago and am a mechanical engineer.

At the 14 month point, (2 months after the warranty expired) the chair stopped working. I took it apart and discovered the upper journal bearing had cracked and failed. This is the bearing which holds the massage mechanism. It bears all of your back weight and it's spinning is converted into the roller motion. That might sound fancy, but when you look at it, it is a small plastic part.

When I contacted support, they would not sell me the bearing or even to upper support assembly. The only option was to buy the whole massage mechanism, motor and all for $130.

I was frustrated, but I loved the massage, so I purchased and installed the mechanism.

It is a self contained unit, so unplug a few connectors, bolt it down... an easy replacement.

18 months later it broke again and I threw it away.

I am a 170lb man who used it maybe twice a week for 30 minutes.

In my second deconstruction, I noted it again broke in the upper support area. In my opinion, this is not a well designed chair.

Amazing massage chair January 25, 2010
By Jesse M
I've owned this chair for around 7 or 8 years now. Yeah, that long. It is just as great today as it was back then. The fact that it's still functions as it did on the first day speaks well for it's reliability. It does a great job massaging along the spine and neck. I removed the padding in the back (as the manual says you can do) and it gives the perfect amount of pressure when the chair is reclined back. One of the best purchases I have made (actually my wife has made) in my life.

I've owned this chair (in the light tan color) for over 6 years, moved it to 3 different houses, and let some, let us say well-fed relatives use it. It has lasted through all of that and it still works great. It doesn't get constant use, but maybe 3-4 times a month on average. The only problem I've ever had is if you try to use it for over 30 minutes, it will automatically shut off which I believe is a protective feature to avoid overheating. You just leave it alone for a while and come back later and it's fine. In real life I hardly ever use it for more than 15-20 min. I'm impressed with the light color still looking good (we have the light tan one, not the red one, but the soft fabric looks the same)- we have a cat and 2 young children, and it's still in great shape. Whenever friends or family come over, they love to use it. The price is actually very similar to what we paid for it over 6 years ago, so that's good. I got it on sale for $100 off and free shipping. Later we bought the footrest/leg massage part, but I enjoy the chair much much more. I wouldn't miss the footrest piece much if we didn't have it anymore, but I'd sure miss the chair. I would recommend this chair to anyone who wants to be able to get a massage at their convenience and in their own home. I like it for knots around and under my shoulder blades. It's not amazing at detailed upper neck rubs, but pretty much anything else between your tailbone and your neck it covers. We alternate using the pad and taking it out depending on the pressure desired- a nice option.
