For months the world watched as NATO planes tried to bring the forces of Slobodan Milosevic to heel and stop the flood of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo in the former Yugoslavia. As the conflict wore on, correspondent Harry Smith visited the refugee camps of Macedonia, interviewing the people who had been forced to leave their homes and lives behind. What emerges is a gripping, personal look at the cost of war. As Mr. Smith says, "We met people from all walks of life. Teachers, factory workers, doctors, engineers.Everyone we met told harrowing tales of abuse at the hands of the Serbs, tales of near starvation, of wandering the Kosovo countryside looking for safety. We even met a woman who, nine months pregnant, walked out of Kosovo with her three children only to give birth the day after she arrived in the camp. In our 'instant documentary' (three weeks from the day we started shooting to the original telecast), we will give them the opportunity to tell us how they survive. And what they hope for in the future."
