Book Description

0192616625 978-0192616623 October 28, 1993
Rapid advances in virology have increased the difficulty encountered by students and teachers in absorbing and imparting information. This comprehensive volume provides students with enough information, not just to pass examinations, but also to develop a foundation of knowledge for professional practice. Medical and dental practice requires an intelligent approach to the diagnosis and treatment of viral infections. The authors present a clearly written account of basic and clinical virology. The book contains detailed information on several key topics including: general properties and classification of viruses; how viruses cause diseases; viruses and cancer; childhood infections caused by paramyxoviruses; retroviruses and AIDS; the laboratory diagnosis of viral infections; and control of viral diseases by immunization. Richly illustrated with over 130 line drawings and photographs, this work provides a complete overview of this rapidly expanding field of biology for medical and dental undergraduates.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Primarily a textbook for the medical, dental and microbiology undergraduate student, Human Virology aims to provide a sound grounding in the fundamentals of this fascinating and rapidly developing subspeciality. The authors are virologists with distinguished scientific pedigrees and extensive experience in teaching, and they write in a lively and interesting style."..."Passing exams remains the major academic obsession, and any text that offers information in a readable and easily memorised style should be welcomed. Collier and Oxford's book does this, and presents material in such a stimulating fashion that is should also attract bright students into this sphere of medicine." Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine

"...with its short chaptures and good diagrams, this book will be well suited for those who want a basic overview of the subjects surrounding virology. Furthermore, it is very up-to-date and well structured for those who need a last minute cramming in before the exams!" GKT Gazette --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book available for intro virology, May 27, 2006

As a virology student, this is the first place I go to when reviewing any viral disease. It gets to the point and gives you all the necessary information you need on viruses. For all the common viruses, this book has no equal. Other books do go into more detail, but nothing comes close to Collier to giving you the basic knowledge you need.

3.0 out of 5 stars For very select audience only, February 15, 2009
This review is from: Human Virology (Paperback)
I was required to read this for a Public Health course. The textbook skips over vital explanations, uses too many abbreviations (without explaining what they are), and bolds important words without defining them. I was constantly on the computer attempting to find a better explanation elsewhere. However, I guess I should fault the professor of my course more than the textbook authors. Perhaps this book should have a memo explaining it is only for those with an advanced understanding of microbiology and medicine.
