As Grace Descends

Few bands can be credited with creating a legacy, however, legendary New York based extreme metal outfit SUFFOCATION have done just that. For 20 years now SUFFOCATION have been creating music that has become the very standard by which we judge all things extreme.

Their fusion of technicality, groove and sheer unrelenting brutality has been imitated but never quite duplicated. Milestone ... Read more in Amazon's Suffocation Store

Editorial Reviews

Suffocation's legendary 'Human Waste' is the blueprint that brutal, down tuned death metal has come to follow. Originally released in 1991, 'Human Waste' is one of metal's most extreme and influential moments. Includes 2 bonus tracks 'Involuntary Slaughter' & ' Reincremation'. Relapse Records. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile purchase. June 11, 2005
Format:Audio CD
First of all, the information: This is a remastered/remixed version of the original "Human Waste" EP, though I believe it is the same remaster that came out a few years ago (2000?) for another Relapse reissue. I am a bit confused myself because my old copy was dated 2000 but I swear this one sounds better...I could be imagining it.
Anyway, this version has slightly improved cover artwork, a different general layout for the back cover etc, an actual booklet including photo and lyrics (including the until now unknown lyrics to the title track) and two demo tracks from the Reincremation demo from 1990: "Involuntary Slaughter," and "Reincremation". The demo tracks are cool to hear, the quality is poor which is what you would expect, the sound of the demo material reminds me of early 'Schizophrenia" era sepultura material.

That was what you would need to know having already owned the album and wanting to find out the differences. Now on to the album itself:

"Human Waste" is essential old school death metal. The first album ever released on the now huge Relapse Records, this paved the way for most of the brutal death metal we know and love today and also served as a prelude to Suffocation's genre defining classic "Effigy of the Forgotten". The entire album only contains one song not available on any other suffocation release: the title track, "Human Waste". It's more than worth it though, because Human Waste is top notch Suffocation. Half the album later appeared on "Effigy of the Forgotten" (infecting the crypts, jesus wept, mass obliteration), while the other two tracks were rerecorded for the "Pierced from Within" (synthetically revived) and "Despise the Sun" (catatonia) albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen and weep... October 27, 1999
Format:Audio CD
This is, quite simply, exactly how death meatl should sound. This is THE best production EVER!! Far from clean, it basically captures the essence the best, fastest and most BRUTAL DM-songs ever written! The cover is crude, basic, BRILLIANT and reflects exactly what you can expect sonically!

5.0 out of 5 stars It will eat your soul December 29, 2005
Format:Audio CD
Human Waste belongs in any death metal fan's catalog. It is an onslaught of savage brutality and technical genius with one of the most INSANE vocal assaults in the history of recorded sound.

Not recommended for fans of Atreyu, Bleeding Through, Kittie, As I Lay Dying and other generic mallcore fodder, as they may soil their adult diapers.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME DEATH METAL! October 12, 2000
Format:Audio CD
The best Death Metal Group with yet another masterpiece. Although they have broken up, Suffocation still stands at the top of the list in the genre. Their speed is unmatched in brutal tracks like "Jesus Wept" and "Infecting the Crypts". 6 songs is plenty for such a talented group as Suffocation to instate their name, one you won't soon forget. Remember that when you go to your local record store, overlook such cheap imitations as Six Feet Under and Cannibal Corpse(though also talented themselves) and go for Suffocation. Human Waste is good, but just try not to buy another album by the uncanny Suffocation.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE holy grail of true brutal death metal!!!!!! June 22, 2005
By eric b
Format:Audio CD
Suffocation is THE best band ever! Every release they put out kills (i know breeding the spawn was decent if it wasn't for the sh*&&y production job). Anyway this is the reason why brutal death metal is my favorite genre and suffocation is the ultimate band. This cd is flawless, every song has the ability to tear your face off kick your ass. And this isn't just pointless noise (mortician) terrance hobbs and doug cerrito know exactly what they are doing, all the scale and modal runs are perfect and the haunting melodies (mostly 5ths) are great. Mike smith proves to be one of the best drummers i've heard, he can keep time with the best of 'em, josh barohn is an increadibly skilled and technical bass player, and frank mullen, holy christ!!, his vocals on this album are absolutely INSANE. This is essential material if you claim to be tommy tough nuts. Now put your head between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye!!! \m/ \m/ \m/

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the money August 3, 2004
Format:Audio CD
Ok, some of you may be like me and thinking "Why would I pay $12.99 (what I paid) for a cd with only 6 songs?" I gotta say, because it is that damn good. 3 of the songs are redone for "Effigy of the Forgotten", one redone for "Pierced From Within" and one more redone for "Despise the Sun", and the original demo they did for Roadrunner. I must say...with the exception of "Syntheticaly Revived" and "Catatonia" these originals sound better. Listening to "Effigy" I find myself hating the vocal quality. I am sure most of you have noticed just how garbled Frank Mullen sounds (similar to a Sega Genesis game) and the drums sound muffled. But, these make up for that. I am almost wishing they did all of "Effigy" in this vein. All the songs on here are worth the money. So, when you see this in a store and see the price tag, don't think about how each song costs $2.165 a piece, think how much better the redoes could have been!
