Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This year's plays from the Annual Humana Festival of New American Plays are somewhat disappointing. Many, though truly entertaining, seem better suited to TV than to the stage. Even Jane Anderson's witty jab at middle-class paranoia, Tough Choices for the New Century, feels like a sophisticated, if bitter, sitcom. Nevertheless, a few plays are truly inspired--Richard Dresser's cutting send-up of cutthroat corporate culture, Below the Belt, and Don Margulies' by turns moving and hilarious account of a day in the life of a woman doctor, July 7, 1994, for instance. Further, JoseRivera's transcendent and beautiful, magical realist Cloud Tectonics, about an ordinary Latino who falls in love just when it looks like the world really will end, more than makes up for the several shallow, glib, shorter plays that fill out the anthology. Jack Helbig
