Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

For 24 years, the Humana Festival of New American Plays, presented by the Actors Theatre of Louisville, has been the place to be for theater people who want to experience the very best in new plays and performances. Thirty-one playwrights are represented in this year's festival collection (for other collections, see, e.g., Humana Festival '97: The Complete Plays, LJ 2/1/98), including Stephen Belber, whose play "Tape" takes a hard look at the issue of taking responsibility for past actions. Another piece, "Back Story," based on a story by Joan Ackermann, is a collaborative project by 17 dramatists, who wrote three scenes and 16 monologs for the play's two characters, a brother and sister whose relationship evolves over the years. In addition to the ten dramas, the collection includes five brief "phone plays." The variety and dramatic impact of the plays make this a worthwhile addition to most theater arts collections.DHoward Miller, Rosary H.S. Lib., St. Louis

From Booklist

In the first, mid-to-late-'70s Humana festivals of new American plays, naturalist dramas got the most attention, and writers like Beth Henley with The Miss Firecracker Contest and Marsha Norman with 'Night, Mother were launched by it. As the number of venues for new work continues to shrink, Humana has taken upon itself to encourage experimental or, at least, nonconformist work. This year's festival featured absurdist work by David Ives, a lyrical fantasy by Charles L. Mee, and a series of short plays intended to be listened to in a phone booth. Even the more conventional pieces, such as Anne Bogart and Naomi Iizuka's Orson Welles play War of the Worlds , were unconventionally structured. There was still room for the odd realist play, like Stephen Belber's stoic little Tape, about a trio of old friends coming to grips with the past, but such plays were decidedly scarcer than in previous festivals. All the Humana 2000 plays, absurdist and naturalist, appear herein, along with biographical notes on their authors and cast lists of the Humana productions. Jack Helbig

So far, the best Humana Festival. A must for anyone interested in theatre whether student, teacher, or just playgoer. I highly recommend reading Anton in Show Business and Big Love from it for some really enjoyable reading.
