From the Inside Flap
Plays that stand the test of time. Plays that are of the moment. Plays that are universal. Plays that spring from a strong sense of place. Plays that look outward to the world. Plays that celebrate an inward poetic journey. Plays of language. Plays of ideas. Plays by young artists. Plays by women. If 2004 was considered by many to be one of the most successful Humana festivals in recent memory, it is because all of this (and more) is represented in the plays contained in this volume. Here is a vibrant testament to the vitality of the contemporary American playwright. The many facets and styles of expression in this collection are unified by a heightened sense of theatricality and an implicit understanding that great plays are made in three-dimensional space with fine actors, strong design and an audience to receive them. For the twenty-sixth consecutive year, the festival was made possible by a grant from The Humana Foundation. This remarkable support represents one of the longest continual corporate contributions to an American performing arts group. We are extremely proud of this long association as well as the abundant legacy of new plays that their generosity has made possible. With the addition of these fascinating works from 2004, we continue to celebrate and support great writing for the stage. Marc Masterson Artistic Director Actors Theatre of Louisville
