Biography

Reggae singer Jimmy Cliff is best known for compiling and appearing on the 1972 soundtrack album The Harder They Come, which is often said to be one of the best reggae albums ever. Including well-known songs such as the title track, "You Can Get It If You Really Want", "Many Rivers To Cross" and The Maytals' "Pressure Drop", The Harder They Come helped to popularise reggae outside of Jamaica.… Read more in Amazon's Jimmy Cliff Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Jimmy time, July 2, 2001

It sees only natural for reggae's elder rootsman to make an album in this style. On the song "Rise up" He teamed with digital rythm masters Wycliffe "steely" Johnson and Clevland "clevie" Browne, drawing on his ska and early regea roots and spiritual vision while rhythmically placing him firmly in the dancehall. Cliff's sweetly weathered voice and engaging vocal arrangements float over a tough but bouyant rythm, creating one of the most distinctive recorse of the conciouse reggea period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a classic, but a good effort, July 28, 1999

Jimmy delivers the goods as usual. Although it's not as thoroughly excellent as some of his albums, there are some great cuts. The cover of James Taylor is a nice touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars An all-around great CD, September 28, 2007
This review is from: Humanitarian (Audio CD)
I purchased this a few years at a discount store not expecting too much. At the time I didn't know too much (or anything) about Jimmy Cliff. But I was pleasantly surprised with this CD. I like every song, and this is surprising because I am hard to please when it comes to music. I rarely like more than a couple songs on a CD. Every song on this disc is good. My favorite is Keep the Family. It's fast-paced and the lyrics are awesome and heart-felt. Every song is really good. There are no losers on this dsc. I now own another Cliff CD, The Best of Jimmy Cliff. It's also a really great CD, and again, I like every song! Cliff's voice is really nice, it has a pleasant lilting quality to it.
