It sees only natural for reggae's elder rootsman to make an album in this style. On the song "Rise up" He teamed with digital rythm masters Wycliffe "steely" Johnson and Clevland "clevie" Browne, drawing on his ska and early regea roots and spiritual vision while rhythmically placing him firmly in the dancehall. Cliff's sweetly weathered voice and engaging vocal arrangements float over a tough but bouyant rythm, creating one of the most distinctive recorse of the conciouse reggea period.

Not a classic, but a good effort,

Jimmy delivers the goods as usual. Although it's not as thoroughly excellent as some of his albums, there are some great cuts. The cover of James Taylor is a nice touch.

I purchased this a few years at a discount store not expecting too much. At the time I didn't know too much (or anything) about Jimmy Cliff. But I was pleasantly surprised with this CD. I like every song, and this is surprising because I am hard to please when it comes to music. I rarely like more than a couple songs on a CD. Every song on this disc is good. My favorite is Keep the Family. It's fast-paced and the lyrics are awesome and heart-felt. Every song is really good. There are no losers on this dsc. I now own another Cliff CD, The Best of Jimmy Cliff. It's also a really great CD, and again, I like every song! Cliff's voice is really nice, it has a pleasant lilting quality to it.

As a long time fan of Jimmy, I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. He's saying something about who he has become, and it's a fun journey. The track "Giants" makes you want to jump up and dance! And "I'm in All" takes me back to time spent in Jamaica. The last two tracks on this 14 track CD are the only ones I don't play much. The rest are inspirational and uplifting! If you miss Bob Marley, it's a blessing that people like Jimmy Cliff still make music -- and I highly recommend Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers "Fallen is Babylon" and "Free Like We Want 2B" also.

From 1999. While not one of his strongest efforts to date, the lp shows that Cliff still can deliver the goods. His new songs are as moving as ever, as is his voice, which is still strong. While the cover of the Baetles " Ob-La-Di,Ob-La-Da" is a mystery to me best left unsolved(why anyone would cover that song is beyond me), the cover of Carole King's You've Got a Friend" is a good way to finish off any album, no less a Cliff lp. A good choice there. While listeners should get Cliff's prime lps first, ther is no reason to pass this lp by. A good effort, if not groundbreaking. |
