Editorial Reviews

Review

"A poignant tale, told in a charmingly human voice, of three idealist young men attempting to resolve their different views of Taiwan. The author asks how the world can continue to justify the constant pressure--economic, military, and political--on free and democratic Taiwan from a hostile, authoritarian China. This is beautifully written." -- Dr. June Teufel Dreyer, served three terms as commissioner of the United States Economic and Security Review Commision, author of China's Political System: Modernization and Tradition, and Professor of Political Science at University of Miami

This insightful young writer has captured in Humanity At Stake so many of the dilemmas that Taiwan has faced in its modern history. All people concerned for human rights and Taiwan, or the American public that wants to understand the basic issues of Taiwan-China cross-strait relations should read this enjoyable book. An inspiring read! -- Shih-Meng Chen, Professor at National Taiwan University and former Secretary General of Taiwan's Presidential Office

"If you have ever tried to intelligently discuss the complexities of Taiwan-China-US relations and found yourself in an awkward moment due to personal sensitivities or lack of expertise, then Humanity At Stake is a must-read. Abe Young readily crafts an honest, amusing and contemplative exploration of the issues behind the current international state of affairs regarding Taiwan, all revolving around an everyday conversational encounter. He has a gift for putting into words (and footnotes) the thoughts that most Taiwanese Americans wish to articulate. This is a wonderful starting point to introduce the facts and issues and to initiate further dialogue in an interesting and entertaining way." -- Dr. HoChie Tsai, Community organizer and Creator of the web portal site TaiwaneseAmerican.org

"In the context of a casual conversation between co-workers, Abe Young presents a straightforward and measured discussion of China's relationship with Taiwan and Taiwan's impressive democratic growth. Informative without being didactic, Humanity at Stake is a must-read for anyone concerned about peace and democracy in Asia." -- Shawna Yang Ryan Author of Locke 1928, and winner of 2006 Maurice Prize for Fiction

"Occasionally it happens that an individual who's been concerned with a particular issue for some time suddenly sees how the subject can most effectively be tackled. Abraham Young, still in his twenties, is an American citizen of Taiwanese descent who has been involved in lobbying the US Congress on the issue of Taiwan. But in this short essay, easily readable at a sitting, he describes a discussion with two coworkers that manages to put the essence of his case in a nutshell, making it simultaneously cogent, comprehensible and an attractive, easy read...Humanity at Stake is a curiously sympathetic work...This is an admirable book. If ignorance about Taiwan is as extensive in the US as the author claims it is, then the sheer accessibility of this little publication is greatly to its advantage." -- Taipei Times, June 8, 2008

"This insightful young writer has captured in Humanity At Stake so many of the dilemmas that Taiwan has faced in its modern history. All people concerned for human rights and Taiwan, or the American public that wants to understand the basic issues of Taiwan-China cross-strait relations should read this enjoyable book. An inspiring read!" -- Shih-Meng Chen, Professor at National Taiwan University and former Secretary General of Taiwan's Presidential Office

...Fortunately for Taiwan, Taiwanese-Americans have long been speakers on the island's behalf, and this new book is the latest offering in that five-decade long effort to give an international voice to the island. From its unusually long subtitle to its promise on the back cover to donate $1 to Human Rights Watch for every copy sold, Abraham Young's Humanity at Stake: On why the world should now end China's military & political aggression, understand Taiwan's democracy, and defend 23 million citizens' human right to self-determination represents a unique approach to educating novice readers on the various points of view in the Taiwan issue, and on why supporting Taiwan is so important. Its appearance is all the more timely given the recent political developments in cross-strait issues...

In addition to the dialogue, Young presents his interior monologue, displaying many of the same reactions all of us go through when confronting the combination of ignorance and aggression that represents the PRC point of view. This helps draw the reader in to Young's point of view and make the work more interesting. An additional positive feature of the work is that Young does not turn his Chinese interlocutor into a caricature of the bombastic, violent Chinese trolls everyone on the net is familiar with, but presents him as a sympathetic and intelligent human being.

The book contains extensive, even elaborate footnotes that provide further background to the points Young makes in his responses. These usually have internet sources, enabling the reader to easily explore the issues in greater depth. Contemporary issues, such as the WHO exclusion, also make an appearance...

For readers who are unfamiliar with the Taiwan issue Humanity at Stake is an extremely readable introduction to the issues, packed with useful information. I look forward to the next edition, when the whole work is translated into Chinese using simplified characters. If Taiwanese really want to preserve their freedom, they need to start talking to the Chinese. -- Michael Turton's Blog, "The View from Taiwan"

This review is from: Humanity At Stake: China's Aggression, Taiwan's Democracy, and 23 Million Citizens' Human Right to Self-Determination (Paperback)
Humanity at Stake is just a casual dialogue among a Taiwanese-American, a Chinese-Immigrant and an American-American. A simple explanation of the weird diplomatic status of Taiwan. Excellent foot notes help you understand the complicated political, historical and geo-economical situation of Taiwan.

A must read if you're a Taiwanese, or a Chinese, or an American concerning the stability of East Asia, the American value, and the dignity of humanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars The people of Taiwan and China are not so different culturally, August 8, 2008
This review is from: Humanity At Stake: China's Aggression, Taiwan's Democracy, and 23 Million Citizens' Human Right to Self-Determination (Paperback)
The people of Taiwan and China are not so different culturally, but their relationship is unique, and grows more so when the United States is involved. "Humanity at Stake" is a scholarly and thorough look at the discourse between the three nations, and their goals and concerns with one another. In the process, "Humanity at Stake" opens the eyes of readers to a conflict that doesn't get much air time in the American media. "Humanity at Stake" is of high interest to anyone who wants a better view of world politics as a whole.
