Overcoming Whatever Ails You!,
By Rebecca McCabe (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Humanville (Paperback)
Humanville is a book about life and fear...we all face adversities, and often times these adversities overwhelm us. Humanville helps us put these struggles into perspective. It is not the vice we must conquer, but the fear itself. This novel is hard to put down because it speaks to the core of our existence. Although it's a story about a woman struggling with eating disorders, it translates to the universal topic of finding truth regardless of the disorder. Buy it. Devour it. And watch it change your reality.

This book moved me, and I wasn't expecting to be moved! It springs from the heart of an exceedingly brave soul, baring her deepest, most painful secret...and reveils a way to move forward; from fear, into understanding. A truly positive experience.

This book does not concentrate on the description of writer's eating disorder, but, more aptly, on the reasons behind it and, more on the writer's spiritual transformation. It is written in the form of metaphor, it has the qualities of being moving, entertaining and inspiring at the same time, without being cheesy or obvious. Loved the 'little big surprise' at the end!!!!

Cynthia French has written a wonderful and sensitive story about one woman's struggle with anorexia and bulimia. Told through the eyes of the main character, Desmond Durango, Ms. French unfolds her own personal struggle with the disease that afflicts so many young women and her journey to wellness. What is unique about this work is that it strikes at the core psychological issues that manifest themselves outwardly as anorexia and bulimia in a very humanistic way. Indeed, Ms French's framework of the places known as Humanville and Godtown and the journey from one to the other will touch many, women and men alike. It is not a religious book, but its spirituality does creep up on you in a way that is sure to make an impact. One does not have to suffer from the disease to benefit from reading her story. It puts what is really important in life into a perspective that can be the catalyst for some change, large or small, in everyone who reads it. It is an easy, entertaining and eye opening easy read that appeals to all. It will captivate, make one laugh, cry, cheer Desmond on and most importantly, cause one to look introspectively. Included in this book is the handbook for Godtown, simple and compelling are the words that best describe it. I recommend this book to anyone suffering from the effects of the disease, their family and friends and beyond that to anyone looking to gain insight into themselves. I thank Ms. French for the courage it took to expose her innermost self so she may help others overcome their disease.

Humanville,

After going through anarexia and bolimia with a member of my family, I appreciated the forthright way in which "Humanville" was written. I believe this will help a great deal with dealing on an everyday basis, with high school age people. Being a Christian, I would have appreciated more of a personal; Father-son or Father-daughter relationship in the book, but I understand the importance of reaching all faiths with this message of health, both mind and Spirit. Thank you, Cynthia, for opening up this experiance for all to learn by.

A MUST READ,

This book is written like no other book I have ever read, it is grippingly honest and real and obviously comes from a very special place. Cynthia's approach to the story is so direct and heartfelt. I really liked it and highly recommend it to everyone in need of inspiration.....does anyone not need inspiration? It will definitely help as an inspiration to anyone dealing with eating disorders, but should not be limited to that audience as the book deals with a much wider viewpoint of life. GET IT! READ IT!

Humanville....the way it really is!,
By "headway37" (Marina del Rey, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Humanville (Paperback)
I am not too big on Self Help books. In fact I have always steered clear of them. I carry equal distain for books about religion or God (other than the Bible of course). So the fact that I have anything good to say is quite amazing. A friend gave Humanville to me and informed me a friend of hers had written it...so I took it home. I picked it up one night when I got into bed and started glancing through it. Before you know it I had read the whole book at one sitting. Cover to cover! I put myself in the position of Desmond(the main character) without even realizing I had done so...crying, laughing and shaking my head with agreement. This book isn't just for people struggling with their belief system or weight or even addictions. It is for anyone living life...the day to day...the unspoken events that happen every minute that help to shape us and guide us.....good and bad. It's for anyone that can read. I went out the next day and bought three more books for Christmas presents and I hope the resipiants feel the same way I felt after reading it....twice!

Awful writing,
By An avid reader (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Humanville (Paperback)
Although Ms. French adds a unique volume to the ever-growing body of eating disorder literature, her writing, unfortunately, makes it unreadable. Having said that, I must admit that I did not finish the book, but only because it was unbearable to read. It may very well be a powerful andpoignant fable, but the writing itself is tedious and uncompelling.
