5.0 out of 5 stars Honest voice
This is quite a pageturner. My wife and I rarely finish the same book within the same day. We live an era of ghost written celebrity biographies written with boring pedantic voices. 2.0 out of 5 stars A must for fans, but poorly done
I've just finished this on the Kindle (excellent experience), and while I would love to sing the praises of this autobiography, I simply can't. I really like Ramsay. He's obviously someone who worked his butt off to get to where he is and he's very straightforward. But the man needs an editor. This book is all over the place. It seems like it's in rough chronological...

I have no illusions that Ramsay wrote this book without assistance (whether an editor or overzealous assistant)but the book certainly captures his voice. The result is an honest unapologetic narrative of the life of a remarkable man. There are lessons to be learned, hard work as the solution for overcoming adversity. Readers of food porn may be dissapointed in that the book is less about the food than the man behind the food. Fans of Ramsay will be delighted because of the insight into the method behind his madness.

5.0 out of 5 stars New intensity..............., February 5, 2007

Imagine if every person on earth put the same level of passion, intensity and energy into their jobs as Gordon does to his. Imagine a world where half-a%# workmanship and pathetic laziness was unaccepptable, as it is in Ramsay's kitchens. Just imagine.......
An amazing book was this. I wished it could have gone on and on. The real story behind a driven man whose ethics of perfection can be easily applied to every work situation in the world, regardless of occupation. Challenge yourself to accept Ramsay's standards of excellence. If being the best was easy, everyone would be great. This book shows why Gordon Ramsay is the very best chef in the world.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Gordon needs a hug.., December 29, 2006

I've been a massive Gordon Ramsay fan since the first time I glimpsed him on BBC America, then came Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares to feed my obsession. I purchased two of his cookbooks for my friend for Christmas and as we were exchanging gifts it turned out that she had done the same. Secretly I purchased Roasting in Hell's Kitchen all for myself and read it cover to cover the day after Christmas.

Having just finished watching the first run of the F-Word on BBC America (because everything comes over here a year late at least from the BBC) I was expecting lots of dish on his television ventures and his rise to culinary stardom. This book completely surprised and enthralled me. If there was a ghost writer for this book I'd be gobsmacked, as the writing style is completely in keeping with the way Gordon talks about things in his cook books and on his television shows, no holds are barred and no f-word gets left behind. It is a rare auto-biography that is penned so true to it's author's voice and raw with authenticity.

I had no idea that this brash, confident, gorgeous man in the kitchen who is so engaging and fun has had so much to overcome and in such a short amount of time. One might think that reading 300 pages of heartbreak, abuse and grueling work (nothing short of a Dickensian tale) would change the way I look at a person, and truthfully it has. I'm even more impressed and amazed by Gordon Ramsay now than ever.

His story is one that took immense amounts of bravery and bullocks to tell, and he has done so in a way that is astoundingly heartfelt and never hopeless. Gordon's incredibly recent bout with success is well deserved and I hope it lasts long enough to provide material for additional updates on his fascinating life.

I'll keep this brief, but if you're a fan of Gordon Ramsay anyway, you really should get this book. It's a much closer look into the life of a great chef following his struggles and triumphs through life.

I feel those that have only seen Hell's Kitchen are missing a different side to Ramsay. My other favorite show of his, Kitchen Nightmares, shows a much more caring side - still absolutely driven and brutally honest, but very caring. He truly wants to see these owners do well.

All I can say is grab the book if you want a closer look into the man, rather than his recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Same as "Humble Pie", January 18, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a fascinating insight into the man, the chef, the legend-in-the-making; it is an easy read and very entertaining but buyers and fans need to know it is the SAME book as a previously released autobiography of Ramsay's entitled "Humble Pie". The same book, just repackaged and glossed up on the outside for his new American audience. Great book - but you don't need to buy it twice!

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'Real' Story - Gordon's own words, January 7, 2007

I didn't know what to expect and boy I was NOT disappointed.
This is exactly what I had been waiting for. Gordon's own words on his life.
A true page turner, I read it straight through. What a poignant story this man has to tell. A MUST read if you are at all curious as to what makes this man tick.
[Note: This book along with 'Gordon Ramsay - The Biography' allows the reader to learn why this man is so absolutely amazing]

4.0 out of 5 stars There's more to Gordon than meets the eye, October 17, 2007
This is Gordon Ramsay's life story in his own words. He's had an eventful life and his success has come from hard work and smart decisions. His father was an unpleasant man who was often absent from the family home (when he wasn't beating his wife or moving the family across the country) and it is interesting to contrast how very differently his two sons have turned out. While Gordon is highly driven and has been hugely successful, his brother has become a drop out and a drug addict.

Gordon credits much of his success to the advice and support that he has received from his father-in-law and I found it quite moving how he has secured an alternative father figure in his life.

This is a well written and involving book which really captures the man behind the image - and he is very different in many ways from the man that you think you know from Hell's Kitchen. This book could have been a little shorter - it loses some momentum in the second half - but it's still very good. If you enjoy Hell's Kitchen or just reading about life behind the scenes in the restaurant industry, I recommend this book.

Gordon Ramsays' book has made many of his previously misunderstood actions
comprehensible to me.
His face is like a map of his past;and reading of his childhood explained much and elicited my sympathy for that little boy who would become so driven.
Ther are lessons to be learned throughout about cooking, and the perfect way to approach and perform the skills needed. The book is very easy to read, full of explanations, and it has given me an entirely different outlook on restaurants and how they function.
A quite enjoyable read, all in all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Series Chef, July 3, 2007
If you are seriesly into cooking and striving for the next step, but need some inspiration READ THIS BOOK. It is way past him humilulating some accountant on FOX so they can win some cash or get there 15 minutes of fame. This is Ramsay the Chef. From his humbling back ground to him being apart of the biggest thing to hit the British Culinary scene ever with Harveys. Think hes a maniac and no one would work for him with that attiude. Read about him leaving to open his own place and TWO complete reastaurants walked out on their jobs to work for him. It is a great book if you are in the field or not. It also sheds some light on his colorful manor we have all seen on TV. So maybe it is time for us to hear his side.

However it is a US publication by Harper Collins of the British version called Humble Pie published by Harper Collins UK they just changed the name proberly to suit the US TV program on FOX. So you don't need both
