This review is from: Humble Pie: Live at the Whisky A-Go-Go '69 (DVD Audio)
This is nice! A CD of a show from the very first tour of the USA. Humble Pie, live on the Sunset Strip at the Whisky A-Go-Go. Recorded December, 1969 with 5 songs and 51 minutes of music, this is a unique curio from the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the land.
With only a few months of live gigs under their belts: Steve, Greg, Jerry & Peter were already seasoned rock veterans, but due to problems with their record company, few folks knew of them outside of the United Kingdom. This CD begins with Steve shouting: "Why don't you shut-up" from the small Whisky stage, and then Jerry's tom-toms take us into a sparkling acoustic rendition of: "For Your Love" This is the same Humble Pie that you remember from the fantastic: "Rockin' The Fillmore", but on this one the band is still testing the waters. After the acoustic number, the crowd replies with a meager welcome the Pie strap on the Gibsons and blast into a high-charged: "Shakin' All Over". Steve on organ AND Pete's grungy Chords duel it out here, and you know, jaws are dropping, No more talking and clinking of the glasses can be heard, just the onslaught & power we call: "Humble Pie". Pete throws in some nice lead runs towards the end, but as that's fine, what I noticed was the bass of Mr. Greg Ridley, the band's anchor, who is heard as well as felt on that beat. That said, the sound found on this recording is stellar & everybody is heard clearly in the mix. This source tape sounds so much better than I was expecting, this ain't no bootleg. The audio found on this one sounds great!
The third tune: "Hallelujah, I Love Her So", isn't that different from stadium versions you've already heard from later Pie. But, like everything presented here it does sound fresh and new, but all the ingrediences are already in place for what was to come. It's very cool to hear a live: "Shakey Jake" but it's brief as it melts into: "Walk On Gilded Splinters" that has both the bass & drums featured. Steve, whips out his harp and Pete snakes his leads in to some tasty directions. This version of: "Slinters" is the highlight of an already great set, as the Pie pulls out all the stops here and takes-off. This is a must-hear version, as it is that good. Now, you could hear a pin drop in the Whisky, this Audience is dumb-struck from the power, you can just FEEL it here. The Jake>Splinters epic takes up over half of Humble Pie's time on stage, this night and when it's over the crowd who seemed asleep at the start of the show, is up otta their seats and alive.
Who knows how much more there was that night is still a guess, because that's the end of this tape. More songs? Encores? ...Don't know, and never will, BUT, I'm glad we get this much of that night captured right here.
If you like Humble Pie, You NEED this one!
